87 na wont start

87 na wont start

I just bought an 87 na fc. I believe its the gxl trim. My bro and i bought an 86 with a supposedly good motor and this 87 with a supposedly bad motor. We just took a look at the 87 and got it to start (with starting fluid) and keep it going with a little tlc from the gas pedal. If i let off the gas completely sometimes itll drop rpm and die out almost immediately. Or it will hold a rough idle for a bit. However it will not start without a tiny shot of starting fluid. But will keep going just fine with a little more gas. So far we have adjusted the timing the best we could. Confirmed that the maf does open and close properly. Has the correct oil level. Checked the fuel pressure right after the filter (just one little crank. Went to 40psi). And attempted to adjust the air screw (with the jumper installed). Tomorrow we will be checking for spark in the leading plugs. After that im not sure what else to check for besides vacuum leak but that is difficult as it is hard to keep a low steady idle right now. Weve got it to where it almost wants to start on its own but isnt quite there yet. I also have a short video of it running. Any input helps. Thanks.

Your primary injectors could be clogged. And then there's the vacuum leak possibility. You should also try jumpering the fuel check connector. You could also try unplugging the TPS.

How would i unclog the injectors? And what would unplugging the tps do? If it works how could i fix that?

Removing them and having them serviced. Jumper the fuel check connector first before attempting to unplug the TPS. Unplugging the TPS can affect how the ECU supplies fuel to the engine. If the sensor is problematic it 'may' impair the engine from starting. Your AFM might be playing a role as well and that is why jumpering would be something to try.

Where is the fuel check connector? And i would just jump it same as i did for the air screw one correct?

Yes. Look at post #13 top pic, Yellow plug (usually it's encased in a black rubber boot).

Alright after about an hour or 2 of tinkering. We found the injectors to be clogged. Luckily we have an 86 parts car. Switched the injectors and would start but not idle on its own. Then we found a vacuum line that was not hooked up. Hooked it up and its ran and idled. But is rreeeaally worn out and the transmission is about to go. We will be swapping drivetrains tomorrow and hope for the best. Any advice?

Might be a vacuum leak somewhere, I know that's what happened to mine at least

alright found the problem was injectors and a vacuum leak. motor ran terrible while it was in. after the swap we ran into a few problems. I just posted a new thread waiting to be approved by a mod.
