83 oil leak

Man!, I got an oil leak. Driving down the road. oil light starts blinkin and chime starts chiming. It looks like maybe its the oil pan. Are there some coming places that oil will leak from? From the top looking down, nothing is leaking,
How low on oil do you have to be for the alarm to go off? sc

Bell housing oil leak

Got under the car today. looks like the engine oil leak is from the bell housing and the tranny. It is located under the tranny oil fill hole at the bolt that holds the tranny to the bell housing. Its drips every second when the engine is idling . Any idea how to fix this with out dropping tranny? SC

Sounds like a rear main seal leaking. If so, there is no way to fix it without removing the transmission.
I'm not familiar with FBs, but on the FD you will need to remove the transmission and flywheel to replace the seal. There is also an 'O' ring on the rear stationary that would be silly NOT to replace as long as your in there. Great time to do other things like change transmission gear oil and re-torque the engine tension bolts too.
You have to be careful not to get oil on your clutch disc, otherwise you'll be replacing it too. Otherwise there is very little cost in parts, mostly labor. I'd guess the seal cost <$10. Get a copy of the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for the FB.

Thanks SgtBlue. I was hoping for a different answer. At least the tranny does not look real heavy. I am a little surprised a rear seal would leak this much. The seal or O ring must be gone. I got a haynes book but a shop manual would be better. re torqing the bolts was something I would not have thought of.

On the FD there is an 'O' ring but I'm not sure about the FB...there may not be one. Get the FSM to confirm. I am sure there will be a rear main seal and from your description that's what it sounds like. Typically you'll see oil leaking rapidly when the engine is running. The oil pressure is forcing it out. When the engine is shut down, no oil pressure and the leaking all but stops. Very different from a leaking oil pan for instance, which is the only other thing in the area of the bell-housing that would likely leak oil.
