So, I'm looking at the distributor in my nicely running 82 gs, and comparing it to my troublesome 83gsl's distributor, I've noticed the insides are different in that the 83's been taken apart and not put back together like the 82. I will try correcting this next, then mess with the carb some more.

some people call it a filter "sock", but yes. i was spit-balling though, so just stick a pin in that idea for now.
look like you might not be done with the floats yet.

How to free a plugged gas tank
So I may have temporarily avoided needing to find someone with a welder on a Sunday... I got a bicycle brake cable to go about two feet into the plugged main fuel pipe in the gas tank, it came out with a little rust on it. This seemed to plug the line further. I got desperate and got out a hand pump and a can of berrymans chem dip and hooked the pump to the line and forced some in. It sprayed back at me for the first couple minutes then began to drain into the tank through the in tank filter. Within a few more minutes of pumping and about half the can of berrymans, I believe I have cleared out the line. I can easily blow air into the main fuel pipe now. Time to flush and install the tank! I will let you all know as soon as I start to see repercussions from my impatience

OK. Embarrassing that I long ago removed all emissions originally to solve what I thought was a chronic vacuum leak, and then I rebuilt my distributor, resoldered my ecu, and I even tried different carburetors and overhauling my original carb, playing with floats and needle valves. Turned out the real issue was a partially blocked main fuel pipe or filter inside my gas tank. When idling, just enough gas would pass to let it run for a minute, and it would eventually stall. If I drove it, gas sloshed away from the one spot fuel would pass through and my carb would empty and stall. Now that it drives, I have steering issues to address.

well, it sounds like you got it running now, so i am assuming the tank is hung back in place. that said, for future reference, when you drop the tank, there is an access plate on the top, help by like 6 or 8 screws. you get to the filter through there. as you know, the filter is attached to the main pickup line. just be cautious with the screws since they are small, old, and may be rusty.

The funny thing was, there was no access panel on top, maybe aftermarket gas tank? Or tank from different year rx7. Either way, further carb adjustment is needed. My mechanical secondaries don't open soon enough for me. I can force them open by hand and it sounds super pissed off! I can't wait to find a honda and kill it!!!
