2d Gen 1988 SE electrical short troubleshooting challenge

HEllo all,

I'll admit I tried the search bar, but my google woo skills are weak - so if this info is elsewhere, just point me the way. I read the rules that this is the place for a newbie to start with their questions...?

My 1988 SE has been sitting a lot several years, starting and moving it every 4-6 weeks was about all I was getting done. I had a dead battery, so put in a new one. The next day is was completely dead - auto parts store tested it and gave me a new one. I had replaced the battery cables a couple years ago and otherwise no visible issues - but I'm not knowledgable with the engine/electrical. I do work on my other cars some, but the RX7 has run so well over the years, never had to mess with it. I did replace the struts last year.

So my trusted mechanic started troubleshooting - he hooked up the new battery and the 80amp breaker blew, then the 30amp. He suspects right now maybe a short int eh starter or the alternator? The car will not start - he said the starter "spins out" instead of just cranking over.

He is using an old photocopied BW wiring didagram.

So some questions...

Any suggestions on where I point him to first next?
Are there better wiring diagrams out there I can find and give to him?

If there is a good thread for this or source for better modern wiring diagrams - please point me to them.

Thank You

Check the wiring for shorts. There is a direct short somewhere. Could be wiring, starter, or alternator. This is easy enough with a test meter. You can even test the alt and starter that way. If that checks, take the starter and the alternator both to the parts store and have them check them. It's free.

I'm also near KC, closer to Liberty. Let me know if you need help.
