NH 1st gen wont start need help asap

Ok i got a 83 rx that been fixing up. it was runing good till cluch went, so i changed cluch and put new bearings in the tranny cuz was in there. finished it and tryed to start justclicked and didnt turn over thought battery but tested and was good, so got new starter for it after bench tested and didnt spin.

put new one in and just clicked like dead battery agien, than cables started smoking and sparked. checked all conections and everything tight and looked ok . than rewired with like 4 gauge from positive and neg to the batery still clicls and wires still hot. what could be the problem? never had this happen b4.

got to crank over once after trying for 6 hours to figure it out than wouldnt do anything agien just the clicking agien

things tryed
jumped the clutch switch
put on biger wires
tryed jumping just the starter and just clicked still
used diferent battery know was fully charged
and wraped on starter as jumping selinod

thanks for the help in advance iv looked allover for a quick anwser to fix but see ppl have the same problem but no resolve for fixing it.

the negative cable should be in contact with the body as well as the engine/transmission. when you rewired your cables, you should have kept it that way.

Start from scratch and check all connections on the the heavy leads coming from the battery
