welcome to the board.
it might help your cause if you post what kind of muffler/exhaust you currently have (that's causing the problem).
at any rate, I ran a Super Turbo muffler decades ago (I believe it was made by Dynomax or it's parent company, Walker). it kept noise levels tolerable. mine was 2.5", but if they still make them, i'm sure they would have 3".
these days, i'm eyeing Borla, particularly the XR1s.

Yes you are right however
Not sure who made the header exhaust system but was custom made by the previous engine builder. The current muffler again not sure, but is basically straight thru with some baffling around the perimeter. May have been custom made as well.

Shall do as soon as the snow is gone!!
We are still in the grip of the white stuff so hopefully in next few weeks will begin the prep for summer. From what the guy I bought the car from said the builder was from Milwaukee area I believe. Thats a few years ago now.
