1st gen diff ration change problem

Hi, has any one had this problem,
I am currently fitting a new 4.44 crownwheel and pinion
to my Ist gen diff centre (original ratio was 3.9), after fitting the new bearings and setting the pinion preload i then went to install the hemisphere with the new crownwheel. I then lowered in the assembly and found that it would not allow the carrier bearings to sit in the normal spot (approx 5mm out on RH side), so rechecked everything and all was ok, refitted again still had the same problem, tried adjusting the bearing nut but only ended up with pinion bind up.
Talked to Mazda about this and they had no answer, one guy thought that there might be a difference in diff centre housings where the pinion bearing tunnel was different but wasn't sure. Another thought was the pinion bearing spacer was to thick so I actually removed the spacer and refitted the assembly but only improved the situation by 1mm.

Hope somebody has come across this before all help appreciated.

Steve.
