Hello and thank you to all reading and replying to this post. I'm fairly new to Mazda Rx-7s and i recently inherited a 1991 Rx-7 Non-Turbo that had been sitting in a garage for 6 years. The car was started and running two years ago and has not been started since. I drained the old gas and added 5 gallons of fresh gas, and got a new battery first and figured i would see if it would start up. The car cranked but didn't fire. So i check for a spark and the coils were producing a spark so i replaced the plugs. I went to try and start it up again with the same results, after i tried with some started fluid and still nothing. I was wondering if anyone had any input on what could be going on. Thank you again.

 

It is likely most of the fuel system has been trashed.

You'll need to verify the fuel pump is working, check for fuel pressure at the rails, check the injectors (just have them professionally cleaned).

A car that has been sitting for 6 years will need a lot of stuff. All the rubber hoses under the hood will need to be replaced, all the moving brake parts, all fluids, etc. etc. and then you'll find numerous failures after the car is back on the road.

 

I have already been taking a look at things i need to replace and i think the fuel pump may be something included in that list because the gas in the tank was like cat ****...really bad. My main goal rite now is just getting it started...ill have the fuel injectors professionally cleaned just need to find someone to have it done...dont have a huge budget at this point but when i get a new job i can have some of the stuff done that needs to be done by a shop done. Should i hear the fuel pump come on when i switch the car battery on or does it only start pumping when you go to start the car?

 

I hear my fuel pump when keyed on, but I have a standalone.

When I cleared the "cat ****" out of my car I did it by just wiring the pump directly to the battery and using a hose to evacuate the fuel, gets the fuel out and tests the pump at the same time. Hell you could T-in a pressure gauge and test fuel pressure on the return line too
