1990 gxl start up issues
I had just purchased this car a few weeks ago. It hardly ever starts up on the first try and as of now its not starting up at all. It wants to start up. It will hit 1-3 thousand rpms and then it will just shut off. I had ran out of gas the other day and was maybe thinking that the gas can I used to put the gas in was contaminated or something. Wondering if that could be an issue. The car has 86000 miles on it and it is automatic. Thanks for the help.

im having the same problems with my 87 gxl it used to start up and run for about 3 seconds then cut off now it acts like it really wants to start but doesnt i took it to the shop they said it had to do with fuel and narrowed it down to the fuel injectors so im going to replace them let me know if you figure anything out thanks

Apparently my motor was swapped out with a junkyard motor and they didnt install it correctly, whoever had it before me. I had a bad mixture going through my engine. I was burning oil and putting out like straight gas out the exhaust. They put a new fuel filter in. new air filter. and new starter cables. they also adjusted my idle to be just above 1000 rpm. and made any other corrections with my engine being ghetto rigged.

Update. After they put the fuel filter in, they said that they werent getting any fuel pressure, and that the fuel pump is about to go out, so they are going to order a new fuel pump....

Alright so I got a new fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter, 4 NGK 3559 Plugs?, and ignition wires. I am still having having this starting problem. any ideas? its a 13B engine. i dont know if that comes standard with this car, cuz its not the one that came with it originally. I think its from maybe an older model, not real sure though. I drove it around today and it was fine running wise, it just is a bitch and wont start up every time I want it to. Thanks for the help.

You need to determine if the engine is getting fuel or not. Jump the yellow fuel pump test connector on the passenger shock tower. Turn the key to the 'ON' position, and listen for fuel pumping through the rails. Try to start the car with the connector jumped. If it starts and idles, your problem could be a bad fuel pump switch in the AFM. Another component to test is the fuel pump resistor/relay. Go to the fuel and emissions section of the S5 FSM, and look at page F1-57. You can find the FSM here: http://www.rotaryheads.com/PDF/2nd_gen/index.html.

Alright so these guys really suck. They had some mazda guy look at the car. They said that the ignition switch was messed up and that there was a short in it which was causing all this. They took it out and they said it fell apart when they took it out.

hahaha well take a look at your motor do you have an omp? if you dont.......have you just been running gas and not premix?? the reason i say this is because some sellers forget to say this when they sell the car like they did to me!! and i just bought one with steel braided lines and replaced it! and the reason i ask about the omp is because you said it was just fuel coming out the exhaust!

omp are four lines that come from the bottom left of your motor! these are usually really fragile and break extremly easy so people either replace them or take it off! if some one decides to take it off the have to run premix (2 stroke oil) while they fill up! and doing this is what lubricates the rotor housing instead of your omp! you should research it on the 2nd gen just put "OMP" on search forum im sure there is info
just a little more specific each one of the lines are held down by a bolt. it should be right by your exhaust manifold! they cn get really dirty

Ignition switches don't just fall apart on their own. But when novices try to take them apart incorrectly, all the copper contacts can fall out. I'm guessing whoever did it blamed the part rather than themselves.
And forget about the OMP. It's not at all related to the fuel system or starting. The only possible way for the oil metering system to lead to starting problems is if it is non-functional, and eventually leads to a low compression engine. But on an S5, a non-functional OMP will throw the car into limp mode to prevent this.
Mazda dealership techs can be hit or miss. Some of them actually have a clue, but many won't know jack about a ~25 year old rotary.

ruben: Cuz I dont know what else to do with it. I dont have any tools or anything to work on it myself if I wanted to try. The guys who worked on my car, not the dude I bought it from, even though he did screw me over.
RR88: I know they broke it. Its bs they tried to charge me for it.

look on the forum with cars that are parting out some people will send you the ignition with the key just suearch around. you could also order direct from a dealership but i wouldnt do this because dealership usually charges an outstanding amount of money for little parts especially when they have to order the part
