1988 RX7 Convertible Loss of Power

Hello all! This is my second post here, I’m new to the RX7 world, but not the rotary world, as I daily drive an RX8. Long story short, I picked up this 1988 Convertible for $500, and it had been sitting a while. I bought a new battery, new fluids, new fuel pump, and got it cranking, and then after fixing some vacuum leaks got it idling.

The problem I have right now, is that the engine has no power and dies while driving. A quick spin around my neighborhood had me dying when I pushed in the clutch and decelerated, struggling to get across intersections after stopping, and losing all power on hills.

Once I got back home, I checked for more vacuum leaks. My BAC valve has a leak on one of the vacuum hoses, and I can’t seem to find any anywhere else.

I do have my brake booster vacuum line capped (It was a temp fix since I knew it was leaking), and I have some other random ones I couldn’t identify capped (see photos). My exhaust system is basically trash, the previous owner took the cats out and left open gaps in the pipes, so I’m sure my 5 & 6 ports aren’t actuating.

Also, I have a coolant leak that seems to be behind the water pump, any ideas?

Any ideas what I can do to fix my power issue?

Photo #1: (Note, I did get a vacuum line between the BAC and the intake hose, the big ones, before driving)

Photo #2: I have this line capped, I was told it was for EGR, but what is that really big hose that just drops down?

Welcome to the board.

Just a few thoughts ...

The power loss issue -
1. Go back through and make you get all the vacuum leaks fixed. I know you mentioned the BAC and can only imagine there may be other(s) you haven't found yet.
2. Check the timing

The coolant leak -
1. My first guess is that one or more of those really thin washers behind the pump housing is missing
2 Maybe the gasket???

For the hose -
Off the top of my head, I'm not sure what that hose is. However, you can get a free copy of the FSM at Foxed.ca

Thanks for the thoughts! I’ve got a copy of the Hanes Manual and the FSM both, so I’m digging for that hose, but still can’t seem to find it. I’ll take a look again later today.

I didnt think about those washers, I’ll have to check that out when I get a new water pump in.

I was was leaning towards vacuum leak, but the timing might do it. I’ll go through the manual to check that later this week once I get the exhaust in so the neighbors won’t get upset!

Just as an update, after everything I tried, I compression tested it. AND... no compression at all in the rear rotor. Should've just done that first, but the fact that it was starting alright threw me off. I talked to the previous owner, and I'm assuming the seals are just stuck, but there's no way for me to tell. I tried ATF/Seafoam, and no luck. Just a lot of smoke. I'm actually ending up selling the vehicle and will look for one that has good compression (apt. complex frowns on motor pulling). Thanks all for your help!
