1987 hatch release

I'm working on a 1987 rx7 rear hatch release. The hatch lock has a single black wire coming off of it. I'm assuming this is for an electric hatch release button. There is continuity between the wire and the hatch release metal frame when the latch is in the open position. But not when the latch is in the closed position. Can someone tell me how this works? FYI on the car I'm working on someone cut out all of the wiring. Thanks

They didn't have a electric hatch release, it was always a cable. Does your car have the stock security system? Its more than likely for the alarm
