1984 SE Steering issues

Just getting my new FB up to snuff, I'm having a little issue with the steering. I was reading up in my Haynes manual that the manual steering box actually has variable steering, when I turn on way it feels good and even but turning the other way its smooth to a certain point then lunges HARD that same way and holds tighter until I return to the center. Any one know whats going on here? Is the manual steering box really variable? Going to get her an alignment tomorrow to make sure everything is ok there. All suspension bolts are tight as far as I could see, tires are ok, not anything that would cause this. Some amount of steering play, Haynes is vauge on how to adjust the steering gear but the adjusting nut on the steering box is 100% backed out. Could this cause my problem?? Any help with this would be awesome.

Don't pay for that alignement yet! All they'll tell you is that you need parts replaced. Probably ball joints by the sound of it.

Read this thread for good info: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...steering+grind

I checked my ball joints and everything, bushings have seen better days, but other than that nothing that I have seen cause this before. I was reading up on that link you gave me.... Would it cause this problem if my steering box was not set correctly? It looks like someone messed with it before and im not so sure they did a good job.

If the car suddenly veers to one side, despite what you are doing with the steering wheel, then it is an issue with some part of the front end. The steering gear box would not be the culprit, unless you had several inches of freeplay...

it dosent veer when I am just going in a line. If I turn to the left to a certain point, it then lunges. I have a good amount of steering play, but I can feel something "catch" then turn harder. My bushings are shot, wish I could find a poly kit that came with all the bushings needed.

Okay, I thought you meant that the car would suddenly veer while turning, without any additional input to the steering wheel.

Put the front end up on jackstands, and see if the steering feels funny. If it does, then you might be looking at a gearbox problem.

Put the front end up on wheel ramps (with the weight on the wheels) and have a friend lightly turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch for slop in the tie rod ends, idler arm, etc.

Best place on earth to shop: www.re-speed.com

He even put together a bushing kit which includes everything needed, and nothing else. Normally you have to buy a couple of kits to get everything, then end up with lots of stuff that you paid for left over and unusable. Billy does a great job of taking care of us here...
