1983 Rx7 total newb...

Hey guys! My name is Tony.
First off let me say that I am a v6/8 kind of guy.
Have road raced for years and have stuck to what I know.
This is going to be somewhat long...
With that being said, my neighbor has a 1983 Rx7 setup for racing.
It intrigues me and I want to buy it as the price is right (1500 with 12 rims/tires, extra transmission, full body panel set, alternator, etc...
He is the second owner since it has been a race car.
It was last ran in Oct at an auto cross but has been previously ran in IT7 - Road Atlanta, Watkins Glenn, etc...
Unfortunately he doesn't know a whole lot about what had been done to the car.
It is setup nice with coil overs, cage, wiring, etc...
The motor is the 12a.
He says it has a solid rear axle, but I am leaning to an LSD as opposed to true solid?
He also says it is much faster and better acceleration then his 85 gls so I have to believe it has had work.
It has a fuel cell and He said he replaced the fuel pump with a holley before the last race. He also said when he did that, he removed the fuel regulator as he was told he didn't need it with the higher flow holley.
The motor idles ok, sounds good and seems to run strong when running it up and down the road at 90mph.
Said since he changed to the holley pump and removed the reg, when he gets into tight turns it seems to "load up". He thinks it needs carb work.
I think it needs the fuel reg put back on.
Before I buy this, I would like to get some opinions on what you guys think of what he said/did with the fuel pump n reg, are there pitfalls or certain things I should be looking at or asking about when making a serious offer on this?
Overall the car does look fantastic, in, out, under, etc... just not knowing the rotary engine scares me
Thanks for replies and info!!!

welcome to the board, Tony.

first of all, let me say you're a lucky S.O.B. for finding that deal.

a few things that I think I can help with:

1. i'm not sure what you're trying to say about the rear end. all factory Gen I rears are "solid" - just means they're not independent. has nothing to do with whether or not they are LSD. so i'm not sure what you're asking/saying.

2. that thing about Holleys not needing a regulator is not necessarily true. I have seen some run Holley (and similar) pumps without regulators, but I would say the overwhelming majority of Holley setups I've seen have a regulator. I doubt the 12A you have is setup with radical ports, so chances are you'll need a regulator on yours.

3. Holleys are somewhat notorious for stumbling in turns (I want to say especially left turns, but don't quote me just yet). I've never dealt with that before for myself (because we've never put my brother's car on a track), but from what I've read there are some things you can do to make them deal with corners better.

it's kind of hard to make firm judgments from photos and at the end of the day, personal inspection and driving the thing are what should make your decision, but if you have photos of the car feel free to post them and i'm sure people can offer opinions on your possible purchase.

No shortage of good reliable help on this forum notbob , some of these guys live and breath rotaries and never seem to tire of helping serious rotary people . Diabolical 1 is one of them ,.

As much as I like the Holley carburetor they have problems sometimes on aggressive cornering because of the float set up .. There are models that have a center slung float instead of from the side but are still not totally immune from flooding and sometimes lean conditions but that can be dealt with. After you get your teeth into it you will find the little engines are tougher than some make out. I don't see the problem with running a fuel reg on the car

You mean to say that the dude is open to offers of less than 1500. If you want it I wouldn't wait to long or someone will sneak in the back door and buy it out from under you . Sounds like some cheap fun . Post a few pics so we can see it .
