The pipe in the center of that image, as well as the plate it's screwed into, needs to be replaced because the screws are stripped. The tube easily falls out of the engine when it's running which causes the car to stall and any amount of running against compression sucks cold air into the engine, which is a big no-no obviously, because I'm gonna crack and/or warp the headers. I'm heading to the junkyard tomorrow to scavenge the parts. I've got an 82 RX7 GSL. What years can I pull the connecting plate and hose off of, and are there any other makes/models of mazda cars that have the same part, in case I can't find a junkyard that has any RX-7's? Thanks guys and gals.

Really? What does that hose do then and why is it connected there? All I know is without it my car stall immediately on idle, runs very rough and gets massive blowback on engine compression. Where is that hose supposed to connect?

it's been quite a while since i dealt with the stock system but looks like the other end of that hose goes to the back of the smog pump? i can't remember all the plumbing for all that stuff but if u download a copy of the FSM it should show where all that stuff supposed to be. with that being broken like that it's causing a massive vac leak. that's why i say make another plate for that and it'll solve the stalling problem. that piece that's in the end of that hose actually looks like what would be at the end of a line coming back up from the cat and i believe that connects to the rear of the smog pump.

Thanks for your help rxtacy3. I was able to find an 80 and 85 FSM so I'll take a look at those. If you know where I can find an 82 that would be great. I've removed a few smog parts from my engine already, would anybody like me to post more detailed pictures of my engine to give you an idea of what's going on and how I could fix this issue?

I just went through this on mine too. It trial and tribulation removing the god-awful rats nest and then getting the vacuum right afterward. I wish there was a " rays nest removal guide" somewhere Haha!

Yeah, that's where I looked. They have the fsm for 80 and 85 and a Mitchell for 83. I managed to hold the pipe into the plate with bailing wire but it looks like that didn't fix my problem. The muffler still pops and bangs under engine compression and refuses to idle. When I push in the clutch its like I turned off the engine with the key, it doesn't even attempt to hold the engine. Any ideas?

Update: I used carburetor cleaner and sprayed it into areas looking for a vacuum leak, we found the area of one, but we aren't exactly sure what part in particular it is. Here's a picture of the general area:

The golden-colored plate there is where we sprayed and there was an immediate increase in rpm, so it's either that part or something nearby that's sucking in the carb cleaner. We ran out of cleaner (two bottles) before we were able to find the part exactly, so now I need some help.

Here's one zoomed out a little to give a general idea of where in the car we are working. The blue in the upper right corner is my air filter:

Does anybody know of where I should go from here to look for the vacuum leak?

well u could get some gasket material and make a new gasket for that pipe that bolts to the intake and see if that was the leak. if u plan on removing all the emissions crap, that will go with it and be replaced with a plate.

So if I take that whole flange off and cover it, you think that might stop the vacuum leak?

couldnt find my camera. but like they said and the same thing i did i took all the emissions crap off that mess of hoses on top and that vacumm pig on the side. i pulled it out and made a plate out of sheetmetal anything will work as long as its hard and will seal. removed the smog pump and the rest of the mess starts and drives fine. i just have no secondaries at the moment but thats cause she sat too long. oh all the little brass nipples below the carb on the other side not the header side pinch or seal them somehow. thats how i did thats how my dad did it with the ones that he built in puerto rico. GOOD LUCK ill try to find my camera
