1980 rx-7 difficult to accellerate

Hello, I have a 1980 RX-7 that when driven is extremely difficult if not impossible to shift out of first gear because it's not building up enough speed. I have to floor it to even go like 15 mph. Then it over heats after 10 or 15 minutes of use. could somebody tell me why this is happening and how to solve it? Thanks.

First thing to try would be a new fuel filter. Second thing to do is a check of the ignition system, making sure that you have spark on all of the plugs with a visual inspection (although an 80 might have only part time trailing spark (top plugs), not sure on that though).

Do not let your rotary overheat! That is the single quickest way to kill it...
