12a Rotor Housings

Anyone know if any companies are providing aftermarket solutions to the discontinuation of the 12a rotor housings. I am sure this must have come up already, but I need a tech post.

They are still out there but are $1600 for a brand new pair. They have other options, like the cermet coating or refurbishing which is cheaper. I am working with someone who is getting them from Mazda and for only $800. So I believe they are still being made but in low quantities.People that have them sell them for way too much because when they first came out they were only $70 and $600 for the whole engine.

Another option is to buy a set of 13B housings and mill them down to 12A dimensions. It's a real pain, but has been done.

That's what they tell people so they can sell them for $1600. If they aren't being made how are companies like Atkins (which doesn't advertise them but still sells them) still getting them brand new? I think it's all BS. They still make them it's a scam to sell them at a higher price. I used to work for a dealership. I know all their tricks and lies they come up with.

I believe I read somwhere that there was a fire at the plant that produces rotor housings. It wouldn't suprise me if they drop the 12A production entirely.

Could someone please expand on the concept of "cermet coating?"

I'd like to know more, as I have a spare set of worn housings sitting on the workbench.

They are dipped in cermet which is a similar procedure to chroming. You can get it done for cheap at Pineapple Racing. It takes 3 to 6 months to get them back.

Cermet is not a dip coating, it's sprayed.

Tim Buck at Mazdaspeed announced it in the it.com forum awhile back. My application is for a ITA first-gen, so 13b housings wont work.

I really don't know much about it but I spoke to someone from the main company that does the cermet coating in Canada and was told they are "dipped" in cermet coating. That they cover all the water jackets, etc and dip them.Never had it done but that's what I was told by the company.

Request a rule change to allow the modified 13b housings, but your right as of now they are not legal.

Tim Buck did announce this a few months back. There have been rumors for the last few years that production had ended, from what I can tell it finally did happen. I fortunately have two new housings on the shelf to build one more motor.
