Saw a Red FC in Blacksburg, VA

A red FC with what looked to be Vert wheels and an RB exhaust passed me today. Are you on here?

Yea I go there. The student body is about 25K with grads and undergrads, but it doesnt feel big by any means. The town is very small, you can get anywhere in about 15 mins. Nearly all necesities are within 20 mins, which is in Christiansburg, the next town over. It has a walmart, target, home depot and a bunch of restaraunts. In Blacksburg there are 2 auto parts stores, 2 national chain supermarkets, a post office. So VT has a big enrollment, but definately does feel big. Come down and visit before you commit, that will really help your decision. IM me if you have any other questions.

Doesn't feel big? The campus is freakin huge and inbetween classes there are tons of people all over the place.

I agree with Justin (mindspin), I think VT feels much smaller than it actually is.

No, big is Georgia Tech, with buildings scattered about downtown Atlanta.

I went to VT for both my undergrad and grad. I'm not sure I would recommend it. I loved the school and the people, but grad school at the same place I went to undergrad kind of made me dislike the teachers and the system once I TRULY knew how things got done.

It took me a little while to get over that once I got out (finally finished in 2004). I loved the school though....just got tired of the politics and doing all the teachers work for them so they could claim all the glory only to get blaimed if something went wrong. I've talked to other grad students from other schools and they had similar experiences.

Now some how I ended up in Florida (a long way from my family in VA) working for the Air Force and continuing to put up with different politics....and the circle of life continues.

If anyone reading this is looking into going to VT for engineering and you have any questions about Engineering at VT let me know. I got my degrees in Aerospace Engineering and my wife got hers in Civil Engineering so I can at least tell you about two of the departments.

lol yeah I'm sure that stuff happens at most schools. Such is life...

Anyway, I'm a junior in the AOE program. It is a decent amount of work, but I'm enjoying life here at VT.

Go Hokies!

ISE class of 2000

I loved my time there as an undergrad. Considered going there for graduate work but I wanted a change of pace (ended up at George Mason). I would recommend the school to anyone, but I will also admit to being a little biased. Most of the people I know who went there as an undergrad don't regret their decision and are still big fans of the school.

hey, i was thinking of going there for engineering, not sure what kind though. I was also considering Uconn, but I wanted to get away a little. My sister goes to college in florida, but thats too far away. I was thinking a place in virginia, and VT seems to look pretty good. You guys must like it pretty much if you used "hokie" in your username.

How does it compare with UCONN? A little easier or a bit harder, or the same? I was also looking at University of Virginia, but that might be a smidge out of my league, and I don't want to kill myself to get decent grades.

Also, how's the weather down there? Does it snow a lot in the winter? What are the temps. like? I HATE the cold and snow, and want to be able to drive my 7 all year round.

thanks

The engineering programs are great at both UVA and VT. Most would probably say that VT is better in this area though. UVA does have law and medical programs that don’t exist at VT though. Each university has a different culture/personality. UVA leans toward the preppy end of the spectrum while VT is a bit more laid back.

The Hokie thing is somewhat addictive. One of the neat things about the school is that once you’re a Hokie, you're always a Hokie! Many people leave the school with a sense of pride that gets expressed in everything they do. It’s kind of ridiculous really, but I’m as guilty of it as just about all of my alumni friends.

The weather down there isn’t too bad. Yes, it does and probably will snow. I don’t think that it snows a lot though. There might be a 2 or 3 snow storms a year but even then the local snow plows and stuff are good enough that you are never really stuck at home for long. The weather is fine most of the year. The early spring and later summer/fall are wonderful. There are also a whole bunch of back mountain roads that are a blast in an RX-7.

Another item that may be of interest is that there are numerous car clubs and racing teams at the university that have events and shows allowing you to hang with other people into cars as well.

Nice

yeah, I'm a pretty laid back person, so VT would probably be the way to go. Do you know of any good auto-x places around there?

There is a good SCCA group near VT. I used to do autocross from time to time with them. Here is the website for the Blue Ridge SCCA club:

http://www.brr-scca.org/

Although what I truly liked to do was go to VIR down at Danville, VA (about 3 hours from VT) and run on the road course with the guys from MSCW (http://www.mscw.com/). The events used to be run by MSCW, but now they are being run by a few of the more experienced members from the club. These guys have been doing this for a long time though and my Dad and I have run our cars in different locations with this same group for around 5 years.

If you want more info check out Mazda Drivers at:

http://www.mazdadrivers.com/

Good luck in your decision.

I can pretty much guarantee the VT has a far superior engineering program than Uconn. If you want to do things with cars as most of us do, then you want to go ME, then try and secure a spot on the Formula SAE team, and you are nearly set once you graduate.

Yeah, I have a lot of time to make my decision, since I'm only a junior in high school, but I was just seeing where I potentially wanted to go. The more I look at VT though, the more I like!

So the formula SAE team is hard to get into?

Mindspin- what are you going to college for/ what do you want to be? I was thinking that working for a formula 1 team (or any racing team for that matter) as an engineer would pretty kick ***, but idk.

thanks for the info guys

Im in the ME program, looking to do something automotive/motorsports related.

The FSAE team here is vey competitive. You have to volunteer for pretty much your sophomore year, then if they like you, you will be put on their junior team and once that team of juniors makes it to their senior year, it becomes their senior design project.
