You're thinking of either the Westhampton Speedway or perhaps even the Bridgehampton track.
(sad to think LI let the US's first purpose built drag track and first purpose built road course get mowed under)
Is Riverhead Raceyway still a dirt track or did they finally pave it?

To answer some questions

Its not just oval, and if you're smart, you warm up on the infield before attempting a corner.. the first day i went the a guy didnt warm up and instead of taking the infield he tried to drift the first corner he went into withou a warm up cruise lap or nothing, and go figure, he smashed right into a wall.

hopefully i'll see some people there

We're talking real old school 60's when Shelby was actually still driving, my Dad he was completely nuts.
Alot people would do the whole picnic basket and blanket thing and watch from atop one of the dunes.
Bridgehampton was a fairly active road course up until about the mid 80's then people built houses near the track and complained about the noise and traffic - go figure.
That was the one thing that sucked about growing up out on the Eastend of LI was all the rich jackasses that came out there every summer.
