My FD

So me and erik(erikthedead99) roll down to check out this FD i wanted to get.

13.5k for an FD seems sketchy to us

So we roll down to Bethesda, and a beautiful Vintage Red, Touring FD is sitting there, perfect body, not a single ding. Mint interior. All the paperwork for anything that was ever done to it. Brand new engine - 800 miles on it. Perfect 10-8-10 Boost pattern.

So my dad say "ok, i'll write you a check right now for 13k." and he's like - nah, i'd like a money order or something like that. (that's understandable) - so we're like - ok, no problem.

So he's like - ok, i'll take it off autotrader and say it's sold.

There was a guy before, but he offered 12.5k.

So Erik and I are driving home, me being very excited considering ill have an FD in my garage in the next few days, and the guy calls and is like, i called the other guy and he offered 13.5k.

First of all this is bullshit because the car was "sold" - we just need to come back with the money order.

SO now this sick bastard is making it a game to see who can get there with 13.5k first.

I'll bet he's bluffing.

But yeah that is massively dickheaded to agree to a price and for him to try and change it. Did you sign a bill of sale at that time?

its worth it but the guy is a dick...
remember, in negotiations either you break or he does. You have to be preparted to pack up and walk away at a pre-determined point or you will get raped on price.
Seems like you have 2 choices
1.) play his game and get the 13.5
2.) say you offered 13 and thats what he will get.. if he sells it he sells it..

either way, its your choice.

well he was asking for 13.5 in the first place so im not too hesitant to give him that, and i decided i would go no higher than 14, but this FD is worht ATLEAST 18..its absolutly gorgeous and perfect for a daily driver. has many reliablilty mods done already its just in excellent condition so im willing to pay more than 13

alright well my dad called and talked to him..he told my dad the other guy offered more so my dad didnt wanna let the guy try to overpower so my dad said "ok well if that falls through my offer still stands at 13 and you have my number" so were back on the prowl for another FD...only thing is most other FDs are alot more expensive, $15g+, and not in as good of condition as this one so it will be harder to buy because we've seen a very cheap one in excellent condition but hey whatever giddyup. even tho im dissapointed iv thought about it and its very unlikely a rx7 that good is selling for 13.5 either the guy is stupid or it was only a matter of time before a wheel flew off and it fell to pieces because it was being held together by bondo lol so im going to look at an FD in Richmond soon and the guy selling it i have been talkin to for a while and he is very nice and trustable but i know now not to get my hopes up lol.

I can't emphasize enough that you must buy smart. There are plenty of FDs around, and after buying mine (a 94 R2, which was hard for me to find within driving distance), I saw soo many more. Don't put up with cruddy sellers because you really want the car - life is too short and FDs aren't rare enough to put up with that crap.

Plus, the more cars you loo at, the better you'll see imperfections. I admit I was pretty in awe of finally driving a decent FD (the local ones were either riced or neglected), so the fact that it was simply better made it look fantastic. But after seeing some more FDs with similar mileage, I now believe I could have done much better.

Of course, you can second-guess yourself to death, but the maintenance and repair costs on this car are such that rushing through the buying process can set you up for misery.

So you admit the car was everything AND MORE than what you expected. But dad still tries the "I'll offer him a payment right now with a $500 less lowball hoping he bites" trick.

Sorry, Perhaps the guy was playing a trick back to show how offended he was that you were already getting a steal and still wanted $500 more off. IMO, if the car is what you said it is you should have swallowed the pride and paid the $13.5k. If the car is as you said, he won't have any problem selling it again.

Dude you let $500 stop you from purchasing a car of your dreams
in immaculate condition?? wow..

You would save $500 on repairs/mods, if the car was in the shape you say
it was.. Goodluck on your search.

BTW.. How many miles were on the Chasis??

80k on the chasis - 800 on the new motor - it's not so much the extra 500, it's the fact they don't want to play the sellers game

I dont get it...If the other guy agreed to 13.5 why would he turn around and tell you guys 13k???? Seems to me youre gettin played and i do see your point. If the car is in as good shape as you say i would have agreed to the original asking price....worth it or not trying and hoping to find a 12 year old car with low miles at that price is most likely not that easy. Like someone said, you might regret it later when you come across a cheaper, better looking but at least you'll be driving your very own(which you can shape into whatever you want, including a reliable dd!)
Just my .02....seems like a mute point though.

well i know he wasnt offended by my price because the guy that he called back that offered 13.5 was offering 12.5 before we came along AND THE GUY WAS GUNNA SELL IT if we hadnt come along. he told us this before we talked prices so my dad said so how does 13 sound he said that sounds great! now i have reason to believe there was something very wrong with the car...he was going to sell it to someone for 12.5...does anyone else find it very hard to believe a car as beautiful as i explained it is worth no more than 12.5? and liek erik said..it has nothing to do with the money, its all attitude and morals, we dont wanna buy a car from someone that fucked us over and is dishonest. iv already found another 7 i really like and personally know the guy selling it so this is pretty much the guys a dick but o well what ya gunna do its behind me now and what will matter is when i get my FD ill be happy, even after all the repairs, money, and time it costs me.

That sounds like the EXACT same S**t that happened when i picked up mine. I was there we made a deal, and by the time i got home (2 miles later..exactly) he had called my cell saying he got a higher offer from another guy.

Then it was a race to see who could get the money to him first. Then he wanted a cash deposit and had to wait a week for the cashier's check to clear. Meanwhile, he had all my money, and legally he still had the car.

Why can't people stick to a gentleman's agreement. That whole ordeal made me really racist towards Pakistanian's.

Hope everything works out okay with yours! I know there was a Montego blue one in bethesda for sale..but that was 19k

I've been in such a situation before, and it's not so clear-cut. Yea, I'll easily drop another $500 or a grand or so if the car's worth it...and of course we're always trying to get the best deal ever. But there are some total *&^@$#(!#y out there...I mean the typa guys you just wanna BEAT DOWN.

I had one car set, I was 100% gonna buy it, waiting for the guy to get back to me. Heard nothing for 2 days, so I emailed him saying what's the deal, lets get this over w/. He's like the car just sold...a guy offered me my asking price (only $500 more than my offer) and he said the guy's on his way to pick up the car. I was like W T F. Dude, a) we were talking about the car WAY before this other guy, and the LEAST you can do is give me a head's up, and a chance to meet his price, anything like that...

On the flipside, another car I was gonna buy, the guy wasn't getting anywhere NEAR his asking price. I offered him well over what he was asking. He was like ok cool. Next day, I'm like ok so lets finish this, but he's like well I wanna wait it out and see if I get a better offer. I'm like wtf...I met your asking price. This isn't a damn auction. The next day he comes back asking even MORE. At that point, I knew the guy was a bastard, and I was like EFF YOU, I'm taking back my offer, and I'll offer NOT A PENNY MORE than your highest offer (which was like a grand under his asking price), and he and I both knew he had no buyers other than me. Needless to say, he didn't sell the car, and I wouldn't have taken the car even if he met my price, because the guy's a *****, and just not worth my time. I wouldn't pay him a dime.

So yea, situations can be not so cut & dry at times...
