Marylanders, Virginians, Washingtonians, and Delawareites... Plz read.

Well, we have two major threads here covering Most of Virginia and Maryland. DC being in the middle and Delaware just because I decided to throw it in there... The threads being, the Maryland Guys thread and the Richmond VA RX-7 Owners thread... They're a complete mess, almost unsearchable, and totally cramed with stuff.

Thus far, THIS has been our response to requests for a seperate Mid-Atlantic/State based section...

So, I was wondering... Who'd be interested in our own forum?

We could use it to organize meets, sell **** that'd be best for local pickup (Cars, drivetrain components, etc.), get local help with our various projects, etc...

I have zero problem running out and buying parts for a server, figuring a way to get it hosted on my *** cable account (Worst comes to worst, I ditch Cable and go DSL... I don't watch TV that much anyhow.) registering a domain, and administering it.

But before I do this, I'd like to gauge interest. No sense in buying **** to collect dust in my closet. I've got enough of that.

Thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions?

For the geeks:
I was thinking a Sun UltraSparc 2 with dual 300 MHz processors, a gig of ram, and a pair of 36 GB drives striped with parity should run just fine. It'll run Apache, phpBB, and MySQL on either BSD or Solaris 9... Maybe an IRC server as well. Should support at least 1000 users, probably more.

I could either host here or find a Co-Lo.

NOTE: I want no cash or stuff or anything of the sort. I can get or find stuff that'll work... I just wanna know if it'll get used. That one vote for the top option is me.

Now how the **** did that happen? This shoulda been in the NE section. Mods please move. I'll PM someone in a sec.

i'm all for it...and what's another forum to add to the list of forums i visit daily?

seriously, though, that would be an excellent idea. lord knows it would be nice to have our own sections so we're not tossing everything into the same thread. need a mod?

By own forum, do you mean just our own section here on the RX7Club, or a completely diff forum w/ it's on host and URL?

I'm personally indifferent, b/c I don't get too involved in the immediate regional stuff only too much. Always good to see what's going on throught the surrounding NE region. Plus, I just think it's highly unlikely the mods will ever give this region it's own section, since so many other areas will want theirs too. If anything, the first area that should receive separate sections should be Cali (cuz it's so damn big). Many other forums have a North Cali, Central Cali, and Southern Cali section. But ya, that's my $0.02.

Of course, if you guys are predominantly heavily involved in local threads, go for it!

you can always ask them to create a sub-section in the NE one
kind of like the 3rd gen section that has advanced tech as a sub of it... just my .02
I think there are too many forums out there as is

I kinda thought that was what this forum was here for in the first place. If you want to use a regional forum that gets less traffic feel free to use the NE at Nopistons.com I mod that forum and have no problem letting you guys type your little fingers off.

Who keeps voting for donate hardware. I said I got it.

Unless you've got Sun Microsystems parts lying about. Or maybe some 80Pin SCA SCSI drives.

So far, I have an UltraSparc 2. Two 200 MHz processors, 512 MB RAM, no drives... I can score all the rest of the gear for fairly cheap...

Seriously, I just want people to vote so that I can justify buying ****...

How old is old? I don't want an IPX or something...

What do you have in the name of UltraSparc2 stuff? Perhaps some RAM (128 MB DIMMs) or a pair of 300 MHz or faster processors.

Well, a web server will run on just about anything. Hell, they have web enabled toasters and ****. The database is gonna be what takes up most of the processing power and I doubt it's gonna be all that big. Definately not like here.

Worst comes to worst, I find another box to put it on.

Hmmm... it'll be cool to have a MD forum... with all the local stuff and stuff like that.. matter of fact it would be cool for each state had it.. think about it.. for people who live in VA dont have to search through all the Maryland threads that we create just to find something in VA..

To me it would be cool if we had our own section.. for like Mechanics in mD... instead of scrolling up and down tons of pages just to find one in ya home town.. or even events that happens at least twice a month now that schools out..

So in a since if we get our own everyone else will need to get there own as well.. just to be fair and user friendly.. that's just my .02

I'm in VA, but I'm like 15 mins from the MD border. Plus I've got friends in MD. I'm also an hour's drive to Richmond.

Then there's VIR, MIR, Summit Point in WV...

Plenty of interstate mingling in this area.

We get our own when I build it... This wouldn't be a section on THIS forum, it'll be a totally seperate forum running on a machine that I own and maintain...

Arizona has one: http://azrx7.ipbhost.com/
Ohio has one: http://www.ohiorotaries.com/phpBB2/
Northern states have one: http://www.northstarrotaries.com/

There are several out in Cali, Socal, Bay area, Frisco, etc...

Houston's seems to have dropped off the map though.

Like Pele said, there's so much tri-state intermingling, that if each state had it's own forum, you'd effectively isolate the rotary community into multiple tiny communities. We wouldn't know about other places, people, events, and opportunities. So I def. don't think that's the way to go.

To me it would be cool if we had our own section.. for like Mechanics in mD... instead of scrolling up and down tons of pages just to find one in ya home town.. or even events that happens at least twice a month now that schools out..
Re: the mechanics, don't we have a sticky at the top of the NE section? Someone should get permission from the mod and just organize the list by state, and the listings for each state should be alphabetized...

Quick Reply: Marylanders, Virginians, Washingtonians, and Delawareites... Plz read.
