Inspection penalty in NJ

What is the worst that can happen if a policeman pulls you over with an expired inspection sticker in NJ? Can they impound your car?

Not unless you do something really bad or have other violations. I've been pulled over for no inspection and for expired inspection - the ticket was about 160$ and you can pay the good old MVC online.

So let me see if I got this straight. Essentially, I would have to pay someone, for example $125, to give me a pass on an emissions test / inspection. However, if I don't do this and get pulled over all I would get is a ticket for about the same money. So basically I'm indifferent.

Sounds good. One less thing I need to worry about on my car.

Much appreciated.

The only downside to this decision is that you could get a ticket every month for no inspection. Plus it just gives the police an added reason to pull you over.

They now have random inspection tests on the side of the road in Jersey too. Its like a drunk stop but they just pull over all cars that look like they might fail. I know if you have tint or no front plate they will immediately remove your current inspection sticker. Im with su maverick, if this **** ever happens to me I will be registering my car in FL.

Thanks for the tip Fourty...

Went to the website and this is what I found:

Maybe I should just find "ito"....

Collector Vehicles

For a vehicle to be designated as a "collector vehicle," the owner must apply* at the time of registration or renewal for this designation and must provide evidence that the vehicle

is not registered as a "historic vehicle," under N.J.S.A. 39:3-27.3 et seq., or a "street rod," under N.J.S.A. 39:3-27.27,
is not driven more than 3,000 miles per year,
is insured as a limited use "collector vehicle." (Proof must be supplied at time of odometer verification.)
For inspection-exempt status, the vehicle must be taken to a state inspection station for odometer and insurance verification.

Visit the exit end of the inspection station within 90 days of purchasing a collector vehicle.
Ask the inspector to verify the odometer reading of the "collector vehicle"; MVC may require that the vehicle be equipped with an odometer lock.
Pay fee ($25 and $10 per renewal) for the special decal which indicates that the vehicle is exempt from safety and emission inspection.
*Call MVC at 609.292.6500 or (toll-free in NJ) 888.486.3339 for an application. Submit the completed application to any MVC agency or by mail to

My son used this method with his classic, however you still must go to the inspection station to receive the sticker. They will check the mileage and have you drive down the road and back to be certain the odometer works. Repeat the following year.
He also purchased classic car insurance though a company in Cherry Hill that costs maybe $150 per year.

hey question, couldnt you buy another odometer and use that one for inspection purposes and when u go back home swap it out so u dont put any mileage on the odometer, and when u have to reinspect just put the old one back in. would that work?

The sticker is not the normal size. It is triangular and very obvious. Not certain if the mileage is placed on the back, my son's car is stored elsewhere, but I'm certain the police have a way to check, if you were pulled over for any reason. Then if the speedometer had been altered, or changed, you're a dead duck.

Do tickets like that get reported to your insurance company? From what I hear, insurance in NJ is hornets nest to be avoided as much as possible.
