Head's up for you D.C. kids....

"Effective July 16, 2005, District of Columbia police officers will begin issuing $300.00 fines for drivers who cannot provide proof of insurance when stopped. An individual pulled over by District police officers must be able to provide license, registration and a current insurance card or a citation will be issued."

I think that's true of New York, too. My step-dad, whose an ex-cop, has told me on numerous occasions just to keep my insurance card and registration (for whatever vehicle i'm in) in my wallet, just in case.

I know first hand that in NY if you get pulled over with a registration it's a $130 ticket/fine/summons or whatever.

*shrugs*

i can't imagine NOT carrying license, reg, and insurance info at all times. anyone who does is either horribly absentminded, stupid, or really likes wasting money. it sits right up there with people who want to test drive a car without proof of license on them.

Well of course it is good practice to know your policy number and agent's name etc. or have it available. The difference is some states require you to carry an official document from the insurance company in the car at all times. Virginia does not, and I have never received such an "insurance card" from my insurers.

DC is famous for issuing citations to out-of-state vehicles for things which might be legal in their home jurisdiction. This sounds like yet another revenue-generating ploy to nab unsuspecting commuters and tourists.
