doh!

if anyone know about the site rotary resurections this is what i asked the guy to see if he knows whats going on with my car. maybe any of you can see what i might have missed or have over looked. here is the email i sent him .hope anyone knows whats up with my car...

to whom this may concern

hi im in the know of this turbo swap. i have a 86" se non turbo and i just swapped the motor to a 87"turbo jdm spec and ive gotten pretty far in my swap by myself for someone not sure what im doing .i have to say im about 95% done with my project.the problem im having with my car is that i cant seem to figure out why my car isny getting spark? when i did the swap i still have the non turbo electrical harness and it wasnt touched in the swap.many people from the rx7 forum are saying a number of things and ive checked all that they talked about and still no luck.here is a list of all the things that was mentioned to might be at fault ..
*knock sensor - has one
*relays - none found to be blown or rusted
*crank angel sensor looks to be in the correct place and the motor was running so i didnt need to touch the timing.
*timing of the crank angel sensor
*bad coils packs/trailing and leading - i got new ones
*spark plugs - replaced with new
*spark plug wires replaced with new
*bad grounds - none to be found
*bad fuses - none blown
*compretion testing - did it by ear ,in your compretion test section sounds like a train.and motor only has 20,000 miles on it.
*motor is getting fuel
*motor isnt flooded
*battery is brand new and fully charged
*new starter also
*i have good fuel presure also
*i have good oil preasure in the motor
*engine harness is connected correctly
*this motor has no emitions..not to my doing the engine harness had no connections for them.

i just purchesed a multimeter and will be checking the electrical harness to see if i an find anything there.. knowing me i have a felling i might have missed so small its funny to laugh at myself. if you have any adviceid greatly be thankful, ive searched your entire site for an answer with no luck i looked at your startup section for the answer to my problem but didnt, and hopping you know what it could be?

thanks for your time monty.

monty,
I believe most of your problem has to be associated with your input/output connectors where the computer hooks up. There is a thread on how to do this. There is a three to four wire difference between NA to turbo harnesses and you would have to run an aftermarket boost gauge. The only other thing I can suggest to you to take it to Kevin Landers like you said in Tenn. He is about 5 to 6 hours from here. Since you have most of the work done it's a matter of running wires together. His site is rotaryresurrection.com and he is by far one of the most knowledgeable and fairly priced guys in the rotary scene right now. I can't say anything negative about him.

If you have a 1986 car, injector impedence play a factor also, go to his website and look at it and search here, nopistons.com, teamfc3s.org and fc3s.org

Maybe if you send the harness to him, He can send it back modified to fit your car. This is just an idea. I believe Kevin did or used to do it awhile back.......

I've tried posting and looking for answers in the 2nd Gen Forum, but I still haven't had any success.
If anyone has any advice or know of a place I could take it, it'd greatly be aprreciated. Thanks in advance.

I believe this is an intake leak, vacuum leak, did you check the TPS? You can actually pull each sparkplug wire off and see if they are working. My shade tree way is pulling them by the boot carefully and slowly just enough to see them working. If your car starts it's not the leading, look at the trailing side. But I think it's not the coil packs. But what I mentioned previously... Dead indicator of a tps is if the car surges.....

Jerry just hit a home run , any car that I have had the problems you mentuioned , turned out to be a vacume leak or a TPS problem

Good luck

Calvin,

All GSL's from '81 to 85 had rear disk brakes. Mine's an 81, and it's got disk brakes on the rear, never been swapped.

ok, nevermind then. I know that, but was having a brain fart....

I just got back from Zoom Zoom Live and had pretty good time. New MX5's are pretty nice, but no rotary... But they did have RX8's on one of the course. I did not do that well, anywhere but it was a cool event, and it was free to enter, and they gave away some pretty OK prizes to the fast people (of which I was not one).

I did get the chance to drive the nicest first gen I had ever seen. It is Dvid Lane's car. He wanted me to take it for a drive. It is awesome. I also met George Samuels who had driven his Turbo 20B FC convertible. Car is awesome. I took some picture I will upload later.

I will also write an article about the event. Traffic around DC sucks.

Hey Cal, I looked for you but didn't see ya. I saw alot of cars I recognized but didn't see anyone! Well I had a great time. Somehow waiting an hour to an hour and half was worth the twenty-forty second trip behind the wheel, lol. We should get everyone to post scores. I got:
41.xxx seconds on the performance track, time to beat 37.500 seconds
30.xxx seconds on the Jinba Ittai course(all ***** in the bowel), time to beat, 27.000 seconds
23.005 on the timed match, time to match 23.000 seconds

I actually got best time of the hour on the timed match, if I hadn't slowed down right before the finish line, I might have won the radio... Got a Zoom Zoom hat for the best time of the hour and I gave to Lovintha7. I don't do hats. I thought I did pretty good considering it was the first time that I've ever "raced". Now I've got the urge to take some autocross classes. You still teachin' Cal?
At first I wasn't impressed with the looks of the new MX-5, but it grows on you. I was really surprised by the how "light" the clutch was. I almost stalled out a couple of times before my runs started. Well I'm definately going again next year!

Way too quick. I wasn't even out of the house an hour. We should find an industrial business place, that's open 9-5, with big parking lot, and hidden from the main roads. Or we could talk to some of the local business owners into using their lots......

I posted a few pictures on the meetup site:

http://rx7.meetup.com/55/photos/

I am also writing a little article about it that I will post on racecarstuff.com.

I am dissapointed I did not beat the target time on the Performance Challenge. I should have, but ..... Guess I am just getting old and slow. I should have been able to easily get into the 36's, but I wasn't even close. Everyone else I was with got under the target. I guess I am really frustrated lately about my driving.

But other than that, they event was fun.

Hey, sorry it took so long to reply. Plugs are ok, they are new. The wires may be the problem, so I'm going to get a new set to see if its the cause. How would I check if the coil pack has gone bad? I seriously think my trailing coils are bad, because whenever I attempt to get her running, it eventually floods. But one time I noticed that only the trailing plugs were wet. I came to the conclusion that something is wrong with the trailing ignition, and if it's not the plugs (and prolly not the wires), I figured it'd be the coils. The TPS is ok, I think I might need a new one soon, but I'm getting the right readings for now. Haven't checked the knock sensor, and maybe I should double check the fuses. Which specific one should I check? I hope my harness is ok, but when I pulled it off a couple months back, everything seemed ok. Thanks for the insight though, I'll double check the stuff you advised.

Last night did suck. We ended up going out to "the spot" and saw some cool stuff. Pretty fast cars.

The only problem we have is that we have to stay away from parking lots with residential places near because the idiots have to rev their engines and play loud music like the bunch of ricers they are.

check the fues box near the driver's side strut tower look for the fuse marked ignition "ign" something like that its the 2nd fuse from the top.that is the one that controlls the leading an trailing so maybe it might be the coil itself? or maybe your ecu might have gone bad in a certain part where it controls the tailings i hope it wont lead to the ecu eing bad....youll need a multimeter to check if it is getting current i have another post i asked about the same issue.
added: this might suck i just thought of it maybe your wiring might be fried?
