Comcast cable intarweb service
Reviews anyone?
It seems that all kinds of complaints are coming from the left coast. I'd like to hear some people from here, specifically Northern VA.

Mine sucks here in Rockville. I have the "business grade" service and it still has problems about once every two weeks. The usual problem is that it just doesn't work... fix is... reboot the modem. Get DSL if you can.

****. There's only one DSL provider willing to give me service.
I have no land line. There is no purpose to having a land line.

In Laurel, MD I am getting my full bandwidth (8 Mbps down, 768 Kbps up) and it stays on very reliably. It worked fine when I lived in Millersville, MD for a year as well.
In most areas it can work perfectly well if the cable from the Tap (on the utility lines or in an underground pedestal) to your house and the wiring and splitters in your house are in good shape. If they aren't, comcast will send someone out to diagnose and fix things for free. If you don't have time to setup an appointment or aren't lucky enough to get a competent technician, at least try to make sure the line going to your modem is off one of the first cable splitters in your house and you aren't using any cable thinner than RG-6. RG-59 is usually badly shielded, loses signal strength faster and often older and in bad physical shape.
With the main brand modems (Motorola, RCA, Linksys) you can check your signal strength, noise ratios and upstream levels yourself. If you visit http://192.168.100.1/ in your browser, assuming you don't have a misconfigured router blocking that page.
Your downstream levels should be between -5 db and +10 db. Lower than -5 is bad. Higher than +10 can cause intermittent disconnections as well.
The upstream should ideally be under 50 dB. 61 is the extreme upper limit. usually anything between 30 and 50 is healthy.
If the main feeder lines in your neighborhood are damaged, or one of your local amplifiers is going bad, or if there is too much noise on your node (that feeds 1200 subscribers max), you may also have problems. Check for scrolling diagnol lines on your upper channels, specifically the 60s.

Never had a problem before. Just had problems with the wireless network in the house. I don't pay for it though, and neither do my folks. My pappy's job pays for it.
