So I just got my 87 TII regged as historic.

And ON THE DRIVE HOME from the MVA I got pulled over by Park Police on 198.
Guy followed me for 3 miles or so.

Officer: "Do you know why I pulled you over?"
Me: "No Clue"
Officer: "How old is your vehicle?"
Me: "It's a 1987, 20 years old for historic plates"
Officer: "License and registration please"

*Insert waiting game*

Officer: "Sorry, you were right, have a nice day"

it's 15 years here PA to get a "classic" tag and 25 years to get a "antique" tag. Classic tags you are still subject for inspections, but void from emission testing, antique you don't ever have to get your car inspected or emissioned again as long as you own the vehicle.

 

MD only has the inspection when you first get the vehicle. then every 2 years for emmisions.

My Vanagon has historic plates, and has no inspection or emissions

Dependent upon the county. I have two of my cars (1993 FD3 and 1985 Jeep both without emissions systems) registered in Saint Mary's Maryland county which has no emissions tests whatsoever.

But if a cop wants to be a real dick,he can still get you.Historic tags are not meant to be driven around in.Read what it says about having historic tags.Its kinda funny.One statement says if the vehicle is for a parade.

 

Right, but just across the bridge in Calvert there is required emissions testing. Just a heads up.

hot dam! thats awesome. im gonna ge my volvo and gls se some historic plates! now, in md is it the same as va that once you get the plates you dont have top renew them? and you can get some plates from the same year as the car and get those registered for the car?

 

i thought (in MD) there were certain restrictions on the number of miles per year you can drive cars with historic plates, and i heard they are pretty strict on that rule.

i guess it wouldnt be that hard to source a gauge cluster and odometer to swap in every 2 years or however often the check it. better than putting the required parts to pass smog and crossing your fingers.

 

no emissions means that is no way DMV can tell how many miles you put on your car. just don't get pull over by the same officers twice within a short time, you will be fine.

 

actually i believe its the insurance that checks the mileage religiously. then again thats only if you have it insured as historic too. so most people tag it historic but keep it under normal insurance.

 

There is no set mileage limit. I checked. Thats with the old rules. And Akuma is right, it is the insurance company that checks.

My Odometer doesn't even WORK yet anyway :P

I also had a very long talk with a very nice officer who explained that the current wording of the laws for historic plates were very hard to get anyone on.

He said they could even have wobbling wheels, dragging muffler, etc, but he couldn't write an inspection ticket for it because it wouldn't be backed by anything.

Also that it is very hard to explain an improper use of historic vehicles in court.

 

good stuff! when it comes to inspection time ill have to cruse up the glenburnie dmv.

plus insurance on historic cars is like 20 bucks a month so haha
