Wondering if anyone has experience with the hks hi power exhaust? I plan to get the header and presilencer combo from rb, which is obviously a cat delete, and i want to know what catback (besides rb duals) would go well with it. The hks was just one of the catbacks i was looking at but i want some more opinions and info on how it might sound.

Is it too loud for use on the street in california?

Anybody run it catless?

Would it sound as good if i used the "silent" hi power model with the rb header/presilencer combo? I wanted more of a deep but loud sound. Like menacing.

There are some really loud catless subarus in my area that have no problems with cops, but idk how loud id be compared to them.

So off topic, what catback would YOU recommend besides the rb for use with the header/presilencer setup?

I would have but I didn't win that Ebay auction a coulpe months back. There was one that went for around $200+ shipping that I got outbid on. I have been curious about this(a single setup anyway) as well. The Apex'i N1 and GT Spec that Rotary Performance sells looks nice but I don't want to spend that much $489.00 on something that may be too loud. My HKS Sport was nice and used to be the alternative to the RB but after 14 years( and it was used when I got it) it is falling apart. Using the way back machine it looks like Mazdatrix stopped selling them in mid 2006 so one might pop up on the used market. The HKS I have sounds nice not as raspy as the RB( though the RB I heard didn't have splitter/diffusers in the exhaust ports but mine doesn't now and it didn't effect the tone much).

86-92 Exhaust

Sorry if this is off topic but just for nostalgia's sake here is what the true dual started as.
It was originally sold using the HKS mufflers.

Exhaust Systems 86-92 Non-Turbo

and then was offered with the choice of either.

Exhaust Systems 86-92 Non-Turbo

and then RB only when the HKS was discontinued. Back then Mazdatrix was the only one that sold it. I am not recommending the true dual just showing what options used to be out there that now are not.

If you want a deep but menacing tone, use a Borla Pro XS muffler 1/2" larger than the pipe that leads to it.

Too loud for a daily? Cops are few and far in between as far as how often i see them and there are lots of catless subarus in the area that never get any crap for being catless.

After the car is warmed up is the smell as bad?

I would guess the same as any other cat less system. My buddy's RB setup from way back smelled exactly like my HKS I have. I rarely ever smell mine when driving. Even in town. If I go stand behind it while it's running it stinks. Knowing they will all smell the same on your car. Then the only question you really have left is about sound which is tough. One persons too loud is another's just right. At least you can get an idea of the tone from a video (if unlike many on youtube the people doing the video with actually rev it).

I like loud but i also like safe. I want to attract attention to some degree, but not the wrong kind. My car turns heads as is just because its so clean, but its practically inaudible

I'm a little late joining this thread but I have to say that setup sounds friggin amazing. I currently have the RB tru dual header+ pre-silencer+ dual aero turbine 18" resonators + dual aero turbine 2540i mufflers... its loud as hell when you're sitting still but when I get on it, the sound reminds me of a big crotch rocket. I want it to be quieter but also keep the dual setup. Would replacing the 2540i's with the HKS mufflers make that happen?

I have ApexI's version of the silent hi-power on my TurboII and with a turbo in the system its a good deal nicer vs when i had something like that on a N/A car. You can tell it really wasnt meant for n/a cars we got here.
