does running a cold air intake do anything on a carbed car?

Howdy everybody. I was just wondering if adding some cai pu ping to the nozzle on my carb hat would actually help me performance wise or hurt me..

Motor is an 85 12a n/a with fmoc. Everything else is stock at the moment. I was staring at the carb earlier and then I happennes to look at my shelf o parts, and what do I see? A cheap *** cone filter attached to an air cleaner from my 82...

The 85 has the k&n drop in filter already inside the air cleaner, but was really curious about adding this and running it in front of the rad.

Most cai set ups actually make less power than the original intake setup. They usually sound better, so people think they make more power.
Unless you know alot or are willing to read and learn about intake design, then i would say you will not be able to make a cai setup make more power than the stock intake.

on a 1st gen its pretty easy to run a hose in front of the radiator. power increase is teeny, although performance should be more consistent

Ok thank you very much. I figured that if it did do anything performance wise it would be a small gain if even that. The intake itself is stock, just adding a tube and cone filter to the snorkel of the air cleaner to try and pull air from outside of the engine bay. When I have enough money saved for my efi engine I'm sure that there will be lots more I can do as far as intake and such. Until then I have a stock 12a intake I can strip and modify as well as another nikki that I can strip and modify. I plan on having one intake and carb setup for both street/smog and racing. Any tips on how to maximize the intake potential?

I build Holley carbs better than anybody. U need to start with exhaust. Then talk to me about a carb. I offer help for free, it's a passion of mine.
