Search in the 2nd Gen Tech Section and you will find all your answers. I would say if it was garaged and it only has 79K on it though it will probably be fine for quite a while. A compression test would tell a lot too.

79,000 is extremely low mileage for a non turbo engine. However the engine is 20-odd years old and rotaries that haven't been driven very much tend to have problems from sitting, like crappy injectors (flooding when trying to start) or smoking oil.
I'd trust a 179k engine more than a 79k engine, myself. But this is true for any car... we're talking about barely 4,000 miles a year, you should be driving it that much a month! Low mileage cars tend to have lots of problems.
Compression tests don't tell you the whole story. I have had engines with awesome compression die quickly and I've had low compression engines last me 60,000 miles before finally letting go.
