Emissions Test

I was wondering if anyone would know if I could pass an emissions test with out a thermostat. My '87 RX-7 is a non-turbo and stock. I have a book that says that without the thermostat the emissions are effected.
Thanks,
Matt

The problem with not having a thermostat is that the engine may not get as hot as it would with one installed. This plays into emmisions because the general rule is the hotter an engine is, the more completely the fuel will be burned, thus decreasing your emissions. This is not set in stone, just a generalization of how no thermostat could affect your emissions. Your best bet would be to put one in for the testing and take it out after. They are usually only a couple of dollars, and in most cars, they are fairly easy to access.

its true, that and Colorado is probably going to no longer require emissions soon, or that’s the rumor I have herd. Because the tests are only required on the Front Range. Places like Durango and others already do not require the tests. Which will be nice so I can run race exhaust and not have to pass visual inspection.

ladies and gentlemen, I think there is a misconception. The best thing would be to call DMV. I just failed 4 emissions tests and this is with the same set-up that passed 2 years ago with flying colors. All I did was a hose job and polished the UIM and TB, intake and IC. I cannot get the car to pass. I spend $50 wasted dollars on this BS. I also asked everyone I could that might know. The first guy testing my car said they are doing away with independent emissions testing so they can reorganize it under state control. So find out before you get to where I am. I have no other choice but to move to Park County now. I am extremely mad and frustrated at this situation. So hearsay can cost more than know. Just a heads up. Bitch *** law. BTW, this is not Cali, this is Colorado. I lived in both places. They let harleys break all the laws they want, noise and smog. No way is a Harley passing and my FD is not. What about these big *** diesel rigs all over the road. Its so hypocritical. Thanx legislature!! There is too much open space here, they need to f off. Can you tell I am pissed?

Do you guys think a car that would clearly not pass emissions, pass by turning off the car while driving through? Or maybe putting the car in nuetral?

Did you have it tested in the same place all 4 times? My car is far from stock but I've never failed a visual test up here. Tested at the Texaco on 34 near taft in loveland.

3 times at one place and once at Jiffy lube. I just want to pass worse than anything. I put the stock ECU back and ran a hose straight to the cat. That didn't make the car run very good for some reason, so I am going to hook the air pump back up the right way and see what happens. I am running out of ideas.

Wow, now I got some serious problems. Yesterday, I decided after searching some more about bypassing the split air and run a hose from the air pump straight into the cat. I also hooked the stock ECU back up, I got really bad running car. It was running really bad, lots of black smoke out the pipe, strong smell of fuel, and smoke from the turbo areas. This was at idle with the stock ECU and bypassing the split air. Well I immediately shut her down and changed everything I could back to stock. The intake box and IC and elbow. Well I started it up and the same thing happens. Its weird because the tranny tunnel and all the engine parts including UIM got super hot, super quick. I can definately smell fuel where the smoke is coming from also. Now I got a serious issue. I have no idea why or where this is coming from by just changing a few things that should have nothing to do with it. I have no one to help me and am in Fort Collins. I am so ready to give up. I am extremely lost and frustrated. Looks like this may be the end of it for me. If there is major damage or something, I can't afford it. It is acting night and day different from 2 days ago when I drove over a 100 miles and the car was doing great. WTF could have happened. I am thinking the FPD might have gone bad, but out of the blue. I can't figure out why there are so much fumes? I am truely losing my mind over here and on top of that its occupying my time to where this is becoming an obsessive problem. What should I do?

If you are haveing trouble passing emissions, bring your recipes in to the DMV and your failed emissions tests and tell them you have been trying to fix it to pass emissions. If you have spent over $500 (i think that is the amount) they will let you get your car registered any way. It is the dumbest thing i have ever heard but i was talking to my auto teacher and he told me that. Also a guy from the greese monkey told me the same thing. I am going to do it if i don't pass twice.

hey so i have a related question about e-check.....im from ohio btw(dont know if it makes huge differece) but so i took my e-check and i failed in both the HC and CO part.....the CO i was atleast close....sed the limit is 1.12 and my fc read 1.62 .....with the HC however the limit is 174 and mine read at 502! and so i hear that the HC is basically unburned fuel...so does anybody have any advice for me whatsoever??? i got my rx7 bout 2 years ago and STILL have the out of state title cuz i havnt been able to pass echeck yet...i've changed sparkplugs and sparkplug wires since i took the e-check....but have a feeling thats not gonna help all the way....i've also heard something about putting alcohol in ur gas tank rite b4 ya go take the emissions test....does that really work? and if so how much do u put in and how much gas do u want in the tank at the time???

as you can see i just am trying to find some answers here so i can FINALLY get my title transferred and get real plates on my car! thanks a lot to anybody who can help me out!

I want to know more about this. Right now I have spent well over 500.00 to try and pass. I barely failed the second time. My HC was 99 and CO was .08 at idle. 2500 rpms and it was HC - 365 limit 220. The CO was like 1.8. Which makes me believe something I am doing is wrong. Map sensor is ok and hooked up properly. I am going to start removing the UIM and inspecting everything. I am also going to call the DMV tommorrow and get the real scoop. Our cars should be exepmt anyway, because of the age and the rareness of it. I hate this ****, but I could never give up on the car. I just want to get out and see what is up. No more summers gone by, ya know.

I keep hearing emmissions is only eliminated if your car passes through one of the testing facilities and passes....If it doesn't you will still be required to go? Not sure if this is correct.

yeah no way are they doing away with it. Mike is right on. They are eliminating the non state controlled testing centers and are not going to require a yearly test. However, they are doing mobile emissions testing, until they can provide enough mobile testing vehicles they will still need to regulate it. I bet it is slowly implemented over time. You will probably not have a problem unless you fail more than once at a mobile testing station. At least that is what I have gathered upon my research. All I care about is that sticker. Some rules are made to be stretched. If they make it too hard to pass, then move to where they don't require a test at all. Done deal. Don't ask me how I know.

that could be the case but the lady at the dmv told me that after much research they proved that the air quality has not improved any since implementing emissions control, therefore they are doing away with it...we'll see
