windows 7?
Is anyone using a windows 7 laptop to connect to MS?
and if you are how are you connecting?
I bought a new laptop with windows 7 and my usb serial adapter wont work with it, and I cant find one to buy that is compatible with a windows 7, 64 bit system...
WTF!

The issue won't be Windows 7, but 64 bit. It's all fine and dandy for Microsoft to encourage manufacturers to ship 64 bit Windows 7, but it causes no end of problems for consumers because there are far fewer 64 bit drivers available at this point. And it compounds the problem because most users (not you obviously) don't even know what 64 vs. 32 bit means and it can't be explained to them.

I mean im no genius on computers by any means, but what I know is that 64 bit means my processor is faster. I really wanted a 64 bit this time, because I also am a musician and record on my computer and there is always a little latency. A really good sound card and 64 bit processor help that. But I never thought about other manufacturers lack of support.

for the records. Windows 7 64bit supports 32bit programs and drivers (some drivers are kind of hard to get in if you dont know how to install the manualy)
and If you got Windows 7 (Pro, Ultimate) you can install "Windows Virtual PC" that can run down to 16bit dos programs, and download the XP version. i have done that to some customers that have used some old dos programs and got a new computer.
* The difference of 64bit and 32bit is the workflow of the CPU cause of the limit for the 32bit to read higher coding and are some what slower then an 64bit computer, also 32bit cant handle more then 3.6 GB Ram, and 64 is 32 if i dont remeber to wrong, but then again, its only a few companys that have made 64bit software, you have many who has emulated 64bit software and says it is but its only a minor software change for windows and them to read abit more the 3,6 RAM. same counts for dual core and quad core. hopes that helps some out.
i have an usb to serial that i use but need to read it tomorow to see the brand, will post it later tomorow.

Many 32 bit drivers won't work properly under 64 bit, and even some 32 bit software as well. For a long time after the release of 64 bit Windows, ACT! would not work. Took them another version to release a 64 bit version.
I would assume that some made in China USB to serial adapter has poorly written drivers that likely don't play well with 64 bit Windows. It would probably be worth finding another USB to serial adapter that is specified to work with 64 bit Windows 7.
The irony is that a 64 bit processor is often slower performing 32 bit tasks then a 32 bit processor. And since most software these days is still compiled for 32 bit processors, a 64 bit CPU works harder to do the same tasks. The only real advantage of 64 bit in the consumer field is the ability to address more RAM.

off course its best to find hardware that is compatible with 64bit but i rearly find anything that i havent been able to run in 64bit (except 16bit dos programs, and some W95 software (to bad many of the usb to serial is w95/w98 drivers) som of the drivers i have had to edit the ini files and compilate new drivers to get 64bit to talk to the hardware
and yeah 64bit cpu reads 32bit or x86 software slower then a 32bit cause of the cpu reads it 2 times so its seems to be almost half the speed.
but now its the most software comes in either x86 or x64 releases even office
but a little tips is if you got an China usb adapter the you might even wanna try different drivers for other harware, that can also help (even thou its rearly any point cause of the 1000s of adapter.)
Or just get a Computer with an serial plugg
ohh yeah that would right Aaron about the ACT! as of CRM's and many business programs as SAP, VISMA, ACT!, Multisoft, and so on uses the old 32bit sql, .net or the old Flatfiles databases and they are kind of hard for the x64 to read right.
have been talking to many customers that uses AutoDesk or Adobe Software and they where recomended using the x64 cpu, that was a problem and still is for SAP. but many of them i would rather set up an Terminal User to login to edit cusomter info and stuff like that..
Sorry about the digression
