no idea why no start help!

Alright guys

all imy engine does is turn over and when I hold the gas(zeal floodclear) It makes a louder noise.

I have a s4 gxl with s5 intakes.
Removed and blocked off emissions

Running zeal megasquirt
(I checked the outputs with a oscilloscope
and everything seems to be fine)

I have rewired the engine and I used all new connectors and I have
fuel, I have spark.
I bought a new pulley because I was missing a timing mark on my stock.

I Have a s5 alternator(the old one was broken and could have caused noise)

I didn't list my mods because the list is at home and it's to long to remember.

I just rebuilt my engine and I have good compression.

I'm not expecting you guys to tell me whats wrong but if you guys could just throw some ideas at me that would be great.

If this is a fresh rebuild that has never run, that may be the issue. It can be pretty difficult to get it to fire the first time. If that's the case I'd suggest you search the other sections of this site for threads on the first start of a rebuild.

I got it to run on the stock ecu but it wouldn't hold idle. I picked up a megasquirt to try to figure out the problem.

we're going to need more details...

For example:

1) Did you have the laptop hooked up to the megasquirt?
2) If so, did you see rpms?
3) When you say "have fuel, have spark"
was this tested with the Megasquirt? or the Stock ECU?

The answers to those questions will allow us to continue helping you.

1. We had some problems with noise previously but I got it to around 200-250 rpm all the time(adjusting trimpots)
2. yep
3. I haven't tried to use the stock because a buddy helped me wire in the ms and I forgot where the fuelpump wire connects to. I just got the wiring diagrams but I haven't had time to chase wires.

Which pot did you adjust specifically? If you adjusted the one closest to the heatsink, that can cause a problem

Also, if you needed to adjust the pots at all, then you should probably try to clean up your grounds... How do you have them routed?

Did you guys reload any settings into the MS? Firmware?

My buddy came back for a few days and gave me a hand with the zms. He has a v3 board in his car, he had adjusted one of the pots, I forget which one but I remember him saying that it was a certain one. He also helped me make a custom engine harness with all new connectors.

When we had tried to start the car I had a fuel problem and I can't get him back over here(he is away at college) now that it is fixed.

I would be willing to pay someone to comedown here but I don't know anyone around here that knows what a ms is. Another very big problem is I need to get the car running because in a few weeks I won't have a place to store it.

So you're using the ZEMS with a custom harness, not a stock harness with stock connectors?

If that's the case, the problem could be anything.

How do you know you had spark? how did you check it? Fuel?

I'm wondering b/c if you really had fuel and spark, the engine should've started.

You also didn't answer me about the firmware. Was it upgraded? Do you have an msq?

Finally, who was it that helped you? Obviously whoever it was knew something about the megasquirt if he knew to turn the hysteresis potentiometer.

well my harness uses the stock connector to mate up to the ecu
I have no idea about the firmware, I just followed the sheet I got with my zems
I checked spark with a oscilloscope, then I took the plugs out and watched it spark.
I have a custom fpr and I am positive I am getting fuel to the injectors.

so you're using the settings it came with then...

Do you have the CAS aligned correctly? What size injectors?

Are you using new plugs or old ones?

Can you send your settings please along with the answers to these questions?

ok stock injectors ...

Have you verified timing with a timing light? or at least verified that it's close? (it doesn't have to be perfect to get the car started).

I've messed around a lot with timing. Back a few weeks I got hte car started a few times but i was killing my starter because it would take about 30 seconds to start and it would sound like a dead lawn mower and no matter where I moved the cas it just got worse. Ever since I got a new timing pulley with marks I can see I can't even get it to pop.
But I'm setting everything how I am suppose to with lining up the timing

OK, have you checked your plugs? They could be fouled... It's really easy to foul them on these engines, and it only takes one bad start to do it.

Also, the map we sent on the megasquirt starts are NA cars very quickly. Like 2-3 seconds tops.... Usually when an engine won't start immediately, the first thing we suspect is timing.

Are you absolutely positive that your timing is right? Have you tried turning the CAS a bit to get it to start? Which timing mark did you verify the timing against?

When it ran like crap, did you remember to hook up the MAP line?

the plugs aren't fouled(they about 2 weeks old and it hasn't flooded in that time) and I always hook up the map line.

the only thing I am worried about is I had to really hit my cas a lot just to move it because it was frozen in place. Could that be causing the plugs to not fire properly? I mean I got rpm and they look like they are sparking right.

if you have fuel, spark, and compression, you should have a running engine...

If spark is not happening at the right time, the engine won't start... If the plugs are fouled, it won't start.

Above you said you were running in flood clear, so if you didn't have it flooded, why do that?

It really doesn't take much to flood the engine either.

How did you stab the CAS?

The only thing I can think of if you have fuel, spark, and compression, and still not a running engine is timing... so that's where I'd work if I were you.

I still need an msq from you as well.

yeah, I'm with Zeal. From here on, either we should keep this off the forum, so we can keep from cluttering it up with Zeal support issues, PM tofuball, or me (tofuball is customer support), and we'll help you get running.

I'm going to close this thread (but leave it visible).
