just an idea on spark

So me and a buddy were kicking around ideas about running megasquirts on our turbo cars and we have a first gen lying around and got to looking at it and started to ask ourselves the question of could you run a megasquirt version one for fuel and all the other crap and then run the distributor from a first gen for ignition i don't really know how much the retardation is for boost but i was just wanting other peoples opinion on do you think it would work or be worth it to go with version three and use it to control timing??? call me stupid if ya want i can take it. lol

I'm not sure why you'd do that... you can control the stock 2nd gen ignition with the megasquirt if you mod it right.

it's just that i'm not an expert with moding a megasquirt and i think it would prolly end up being cheaper to buy the version one i don't know it was just a brainstorming question?

That's a great approach IMO. The best way to learn _safely_ is to take it slow. Build a std MS, and run fuel-only on that old 1st gen prior to the turbo install. Trigger off the coil, and you can use the std MS, with std code, no daughterboards, no code upgrades, etc... This lets you get your feet wet with the least amount of 'fiddling'. Then, once you are comfortable with your install and tuning, move on to ignition control. Then add the turbo...

Well, nobody is an expert to begin with

Anyway, As far as being cheaper, it really isn't THAT much cheaper to go with the distributor than it is to run the stock ignition with a modded megasquirt.

The only reason I'd recommend the distributor is as a stopgap to get your feet wet like renns said. The 2nd gen ignition system produces a much better spark than the distributor option though, so I'd definitely recommend going that route in the long run.

this question floats around a lot. the answere is it'll run...until you hit boost. the dizzys has vacume advance and mechanical advance. this is great for a n/a car but horrible and a death wise for a turbo car. there are a few ways of fixing this. lock the dizzy. search the first gen section for details, it's easy. then set the timing retarted. you could even take that a step further and get MSD boost retard boxes. they allow 1-3 degree of timing retard per 1psi. you'd need one for leading and one for trailing. and then for better spark, add a MSD 6a box and convert to direct fire off the coils. and run 3 coils(2 leading and 1 trailing), also vary common. but, by the time you do all this to get it ready for a turbo, u might as well have done it the right way with a 2nd ignition setup...

Think of fuel-only control as a blowthrough setup with much better control of the mixture and the ability to change tuning easily. There are plenty of blowthrough turbo setups with very respectable power figures, including originally NA blocks. The advantage to full spark control is faster spoolup, broader torque curve, better fuel economy ect.

well is there anybody on the board here with experience that i could maybe buy a modded megasquirt from so that i could control ignition with it and everything? because this being the first time i'd like for it to be done by someone a little big more knowledgeable than me. i have a second gen anniversary edition with a to4s 60-1 so it's prolly not smart to run the distributor as my first setup lol.
thanks
