Question Interested in going megasquirt. Few Q's

I have a 87 turbo 2 with bolt on's and a hybrid turbo, I am looking to get a new ecu for it so I can tune for optimal afr level's.

My question is how much would it cost to build a megasquirt to work with my application, what version should I go with, and would the car run just as smooth as a factory rx7 or would be it be like driving a race car where its either all throttle or no throttle, also would it be able to cruise evenly while maintaining good mpg without bucking around?

Would there to a cheaper alternative to the megasquirt that offers almost the same options as far as tuning fuel, timing, and being able to datalog runs?

The MSII or MS3 will work. All depends on what you want to do. The MSII will run the T2 just fine with good gas mileage and good performance. But there are some hardware limitations. A MS3 will do everything the MS2 can but more. Its able to run 8 injectors and 8 coils seq as the MS2 is not. As others chim in they will lay down more details. But there are T2 runnin very well on the MS2. All it comes down to is the tune. The better the tune the better the car runs.

As far as I know even the MS3 is cheaper for the feature set than most every standalone out there.

The MS2 will take more work to get running but will be cheaper.

I have 2 friends that have already replaced their Rtek's for Megasquirts in order to lose the mass airflow sensor and be able to use a laptop or palm instead of Rtek's palm only tuning. Is for as the RX-7 goes even the MS1 with V3 board works well after loading the MSExtra firmware and is cheaper than the Rtek if you build it yourself.

Rtek 2.1 runs for 450$ can't eliminate the AFM and can only be tuned with a palm, also doesn't have much function ability.

I am interested in the megasquirt since its a complete standalone ecu. I would be constructing it myself.

My questions are how much would it be to build a megasquirt system with everything I need to get it to run on my S4TII. I have some basic knowledge of tuning but do not understand tuning timing so much. I would want my car to run smoothly under all conditions including cruising as low rpms, deceleration, highway cruising, and acceleration without any bucking or hesitations.

Also would it be cheaper to construct a megasquirt for less then the cost of a Rtek 2.1 at 450$ and have the car running?

I also would need to buy a wideband which I don't mind doing so I can tune the fuel tables.

You will probly spend over 475 on both kits to make them work. The MSII will probly just barly be over 475. But then again you can run the MS with all stock sensor and add in the IAT sensor. http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/megasquirt/index.asp http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/m...-kit-p-59.html It would be wise to get the JimStim also http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/j...mbl-p-174.html And then what ever Wideband you want. Or go with the Plug and Play kit http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/d...kit-p-390.html I dont know of anyone that has Used the DIYPNP on a 7 yet. But i could be wrong about that.

Looks like both kits would cost me the same in the end if I construct the megasquirt myself since I need the JimStim and the wiring harness + wires and other accessories.

So it would equal out to the same price as a Rtek.

I was trying to see if this could be done for maybe 100$ cheaper all together minus the wideband, so I think I might wait on this till I can make a final decision on if I would rather go with another standalone or possibly rtek

You do not need to but the full harness. The ms comes with the db37 so that you can make ur own harness. And the stim is nice to test that it all works. But if you are able to find someone with one and is willing to help out u can save on a jimstim
