Finally getting somewhere! Tuning under boost..

As some of you may know I had both of my trailing wires wired backwards, this is the reason I had poor accelleration. Now that I know what I have done wrong and corrected the problem I'm able to move on.

Last night a good friend of mine and I started to tune using the stock 5lbs of boost. I showed him how to use the shift up and down and how to use the arrows to move the pointer around and he did what he had to do to get good afr reading. From the time I started to spool to 6000 rpm under a steady 5 lbs he was able to get it around 10.1 to 11.3 afr within 10 minutes of driving. I took the advice of start rich and go leanto be safe.

Now that I'm seeing what this megasquirt unit and my turbo rx-7 is capable of the bigger my smile gets!

I also got a new blow off valve yesterday, that helped my tuning efforts alot. My old bov was leaking boost and vac.

The only bad thing about this whole deal is my clutch is starting to slip. But this is basicly the first time I'm able to drive the car with this swop in it so I was expecting something to break.

By the way my swop came from an actual turbo II I had bought last november, rats were living under the carpet and had chewed up the computer harness. The car itself was in horible shape as far as the body and interior. I took everything off the car that I could unbolt, scraped the shell, and bought this red GXL with a bad N/A engine and auto trans. I stuck everything I had unbolted from the turbo car into this gxl. The main reason I went with megasquirt is the price, I figured even If it dont work I didn't waste that much money. But i'm here today to say it's the real deal.

I'll get more updates with pictures and videos as I make them.

Congrats on getting it up and running. Keep us posted on your progress, and post some mSQ's and data logs so we can learn with you.

I should have mine wired in this week and running next. Hope I have as good of luck as you do.

Great news. Those plug wires can cause grief when mis-matched. I did something similar a few years back on a dizzy setup, and spent way too much time trouble-shooting in other areas before checking the basics.

I worked with it a bit today, at low rpm's i was going lean for a few seconds, making pulling out in traffic a pain in the butt. I fixed that. I have the before and after datalog files. After that I went for a joy ride and dataloged one run from 30 mph to 90 mph, I had to slow down because i was comming up on some traffic pretty quick.

I wish one of you guys with experience would post a sort of 'walkthrough' for wiring, modifying, and setting up the a Megasquirt. I have read the FAQ, but have no idea what all the electronics jargon is about. If I had pictures, showing everything that needs to be changed, how everyone has their harness wired up, and how/if the relay boards are set up.

I am tired of waiting for the PnP's to come out, so I may just buy something from DIYautotune.

I hope someone took pics during their MS journey!!!

The FAQ HAS all this in it already. Pictures of what needs changed, harness diagrams, etc...

Yeah, for smart people. I don't know what an lm815 uber capacitor thingy is!!!

I also can't color inside the lines.

A friend and I were out lastnight tuning with 10 lbs of boost, we were getting close to perfect when the turbo basicly blew off of the manifold. Now I need to work on the car and find new bolts but what a ride! Oh yeah, my friend was still tuning on the way home so we could make it back. I think that was the only thing keeping the car running. It would have been left for the tow truck with the factory computer.

To build your own MS, you should do a bit of research and find out.

I believe in the FAQ, I say that an lm1815 circuit is used to condition the signal from the G VR sensor.

You should really learn about circuits, building them, reading schematics, etc... if your'e going to build your own MS. None of it's very difficult if you just spend the time learning it.
