CAS stabbing issues

I am having trouble getting my CAS correctly stabbed. As of now it has spark but has not run with the 2 tooth removal. It stumbles and wants to start but wont. It also backfires very badly on occasion while cranking. This made me stop and recheck things. I have a picture of how the CAS is currently stabbed with the crank or e shaft main pulley on the yellow timing mark. Its on the 3rd tooth to the right of the missing tooth with the main pulley on the yellow mark. Im megatune I have the fixed angle set to 0 and a 60 degree angle with the trigger returns 1,3,7,9 and have also tried 11,1,5,7. Im hoping the picture helps to verify if I stabbed it correctly.

The stab looks right, although there's a lot of glare in that pic... you should use a 60 degree trigger angle with 1,3 7,9 as the triggers/returns... That should fire right up if fuel is right... The backfires make me think you're injecting a bit too much fuel...

Ok I'll try less fuel. The last backfire was sooo bad it sounded like a shotgun blast and I expected the cops to show up..lol. I have all the settings correct 60 degrees...1,3,7,9 etc etc. Thanks for the advice,Shawn

hahaha, I actually had that happen, too, a couple times when I was first sorting out the stab procedure.. Luckily, by the time the cops showed up, I had retreated indoors and they couldn't find out where it came from. I was not obliged to help 'em out, either. heheh
Sounds like the stab could be off.. A rich mix won't cause that loud of a backfire unless timing is off, my opinion. Get a timing light and have someone crank while you check timing. That'll help you get it lined up proper. If you're brave you can try Time Based ignition instead of trigger return. That should help get you started even if you are way off. I've gotten my car to start in some crazy CAS positions. I mean TOTALLY off. It's dangerous though.
You might also set your crank adv. to 0 on Time Based, then go back to trigger return. I've heard that helps.

yeah, based on the pic, you've got the CAS stabbed properly... It's not going to be off far enough to cause the kind of backfire you describe unless you have the + and - wires backwards.

You should set the fixed angle to -5 to set the timing properly after you get the car started, but for now, set the fixed angle to -10, that'll help get the car to start once it starts to catch and stops using trigger-return for the timing.

it won't backfire like that due to timing unless the timing is waaaay retarded, but judging from your settings and your CAS position, the timing shouldn't be retarded.

The first thing I'd check is the polarity of the wires you have attached... specifically, make sure the + and - wires are connected to the proper places.

However, I've also noticed that in cases where there is a LOT of gas built up in the exhaust from not getting the car started, it can backfire pretty loud... I had it happen once when I stopped cranking... the plugs fired one last time while one of the ports was open, and there was a very loud backfire.

Anyway, good luck.

Well, that is true.. My stab wasn't that far off, but it backfired like that occasionally if I used trigger return and the CAS was even slightly off. It was primarily due to problems I had with wiring that we talked about already.. :-/

Ok thanks for the tips. Ill change the fixed angle to -10 and re check my wiring. I am no longer getting the backfires since I adjusted the fuel. It hasnt started yet but is very close. The -10 angle may do the trick. Im pretty sure I have the + and- correct on the CAS wiring as it ran well before wired the way it is. But I'll check it anyways. I think I have 2 problems...1 Im learning this is my first stand alone. And 2 I have big injectors so being a little off can make a big difference. So I have to be patient and make small changes and keep charging the battery. Thanks guys,Shawn
