Z vs. Ford Lightning

Ok so my FD has been down for several months and I recently (well 3 months ago) purchased an 05 350Z enthusiast for a DD. I was headed home one night late from the hospital cruising at a little under the 65mph speed limit (it had been a long day and I was enjoying the drive) and this black lightning pulls even with me and lurches forward a few times trying to provoke me. I slowed down as to let him go on but the jerk kept on for a few miles. I finally give in and downshift to third and wait for him to jump. As I hear his auto transmission downshift I stand on it and to my surpirse pull about a car length to 120mph. I quickly slow back to 65mph as does he and he wants to make a second pull. I ablige and again do a third gear pull this time I give him more of a jump and only pull about half a car to 125mph again, quickly slowing to 65mph and then getting off at my exit a few miles ahead.

It was a fun few pulls and the Z is totally stock and from the look and sound of the truck it was stock as well. Not to mention a modded lightning should have handed my *** to me. I was pretty proud of my little Z. It is a fun car to drive every day. And THANK GOD the FD should be coming back up tomorrow with its recently tuned 500r.....

i was confused about those truck's, i know the older ones have 351 block in them. but some one told me the newer(i know they dont make it any more) ones have the sohc 5.4 and other people say they have the dohc 4.6 alla 03 cobra aka terminator .
if youany thing about the 03/04 cobra then you know what i mean.

if they do have the dohc 4.6 then you can make that truck hella fast.

i saw a lighting race the dodge srt10 on the street. is that the name of the truck with the viper motor. any ways the lighting spanked that trucks ***. me and my buddy tried to keep up but we could not. the lighting spun its tires for like 30 ft and still took off faster then dodge.

Yeah that dodge srt10 is the truck with the viper motor. Bad *** trucks. I am actually kinda surprised you say that the lighting beat the srt10.

I had a run in with an lighting like 2-3 years ago when I owned my 02 mustang gt and we went at it about 50mph and I got the jump on him and was pullin for a min and then he came blowin past me. Needless to say I didn't need to attempt that one again. Always loved those trucks.

Nice kill though 007arkman

The 03/04 Lightnings have a supercharged 5.4L SOHC. They have the motor that was used for the Ford GT(obviously the FordGT had a few upgrades, like DOHC and a larger SC), but the S/C 5.4L made an *** womping 450lb/ft, and 385+ HP. They were underrated from the factory, just like the Cobra, and they weigh 1000lbs less than the SRT-10. Stock vs stock the SRT-10 is slightly quicker than the Lightning, but with an exhaust, the lighting will pull on the SRT-10.

i wasnt sure what year they used the 5.4 are you sure they used the dohc 5.4. this guy at my work talks about his f150(06 i think) he wants to make it a roush stage 3 but talks about the 5.4 alot. i know the sohc 4.6/5.4 and the dohc 4.6/5.4 are two complete different beast.

The FordGT was DOHC the Lightning was SOHC.

I don't know what year they switched to the 5.4L, I just know that 03/04 were the fast ones.

i thought there was one year when they used the dohc 4.6 with a sc. if they did that would be the truck i would buy in i had the cash.

that or a b2300/ranger with the sohc 2.3 converted to turbo with the dohc volvo head(yes it can be done). i all ready rebuilt a turbo 2.3 for a rs turbo capri me and my buddy own. we are ready to start making a second ford 2.3 turbo motor for that car. that we are converting to dohc with the volvo head.
http://www.geocities.com/_nitro_/vol...volvoswap.html

thats not my motor. just a pic from the guide the 2.3 crowd uses.

It is the 99 and up Lightings that have the 5.4L Supercharged motor with a slight increase in power in 2001. I miss mine and regret selling it very much. It ran 13.6 stock, with $500 in mods it ran mid 12's and when I built the motor and went with a KB blower it was running low 11's on a bad day and high 10's on most days. It was so reliable and drove like stock until you push down on the fun pedal. The things about these trucks is they were so easy to hook up off the line (not what you would expect from a RWD pickup truck).

Truly I did not think I would have pulled from the guy... I must say I was very surprised to be pulling, though it was a very slow pull.... He HAD to be totally stock. For sure I could hear no exhaust modifications so that would lead me to believe no other mods had been done. They really are a nice truck. A lot of good info above on them that I did not even know.

1999 and up are the fast ones with the 2001 and up being just a bit faster than the 1999 - 2000. 2001 to 2004 are the same in regards to power.

The top end of a stock lighting is not that fast. It was the torque and ability to launch well that made them fast. They only trapped around 102mph or so stock.

Start modding these things and all bets are off though.

I have a friend with a 2001 lightning and its pretty fast 13 sec 1/4 flat. the biggest problem with his though is traction with a decent rear end set up or just tires it would be much faster.. but from a highway roll the thing is a damn beast... minor mods (intake, exhaust, msd coils) and pulleys at 12 lbs i believe making 380 to the wheels. But even from when he had it relatively stock I think an intake I know it would eat a 350Z up.

I hear that. My buddy had an 03 that was highly modified (read: uncomfortable and scary to drive on the street). But, god was that thing a rush to be in! I mean it was an insane street car.

My Lightning I sold last year made 422 rwhp and 508 ft-lbs torque with about $1000 in mods (6 lb pulley, tuner, catback, intake). They are bad *** trucks. Having owned one, I have a very hard time believing you pulled one.

Probably because you couldn't make enough power to break traction and just accelerated... on a wet road

I definetly almost died in that truck I don't recommend them to anyone but it is fast and cool... the wheel hop is so bad that he mashed the peddle doing 60 on an on ramp got to about 110 and hit a bump the rear end cut loose he lost control of the truck and almost put us into a guard rail im damn lucky to be here
