GTO vs. Mustang GT and MKIV Supra

Alright, so I test drove an '06 GTO at a chevy dealer about 8 months ago (automatic, but still pretty much brand new) and fell in love with the car. Very good all around car with a cool 400hp and 400ft lb of torque. Driving that one made me itch to try out a 6speed.

Well, about a week ago, me and a friend got on the subject of the new LS3 Corvette (and my test drive of one) and then LS2 GTO's and to make a long story short, he knows someone that has an M6 GTO. He gets on the phone and calls him up to ask if I could drive it and the guy's like "Well hell, that'd be fine since he's driven one and a new 'vette." So my friend and him set up a date for me to check the car out- which happened to be today.

So I drive to Copperas Cove to check it out. It's Torrid Red with red interior, 18" wheel package and whatnot. Really clean looking. Then he goes over the mod list...

L92/L76 Head/Intake combo
Mild Cam
Kooks LT's
High flow cats
Spintech Catback
LPE Intake
BMM Ripshifter

According to him, its putting 480hp to the wheels. Not bad at all!

Anyways, on to the drive.

I pull out of his driveway and make my way to 190. The car is actually pretty tame (though mean sounding as ****) and very driveable. I pull out and come up to a red light with a clean *** blue MKIV Supra (non turbo) lowered on some shitty looking big chrome wheels and in front if it is a new Mustang GT/CS (don't know what the CS stands for, maybe "Club Sport"?). The dude in the Supra starts revving and I see the window of the 'stang roll down- in the driver's seat is a preppy looking blonde chick, bug eyed glasses, you know, the works. I pop a quick little rev at her and she leans out of the window and says "Um, this is a Mustang GT, I don't think you want none" and her and her friend start laughing. The owner of the GTO in classic FnF style is like "Dude, please just waste her!"... so he was telling me to RACE in his car... a person he had only met less than 45minutes before... alright!!!

I look back and notice the guy in the Supra inching forward and hear him revving up. So the girl in the 'stang starts revving too. Light turns green and I ease off of the line while girly in the 'stang mashes it off the line (auto) followed by a spinning Supra. I ease through 1st, keeping dead even with a struggling Mustang piloted by a VERY confident daddy's girl. so I slip it into 2nd and mash the throttle, instantly lighting up the rears for a good 30 feet or so as I feather the throttle to gain some traction. By the time I top 2nd, girly and the Supra are a good 4 cars back, and falling behind further. I slip into 3rd and slow back down, but they seem to think the race is still on. The GTO owner is like "Hahaha, they're still racing". So I just put it into 4th and go half throttle and match their speed, just toying with the 'stang to show her that she really has no chance in hell. So she lets off with a very surprised look on her face. The road turns to a 3 lane and we all catch the light- me in the middle, Supra to my left, Mustang to my right. The Supra's window rolls down and he's cracking up. He's like "Dude, thats my girlfriend driving my car! This is her's!" I kinda laugh and tell them that it was fun and they decide to do another run for ***** (girlie swears that the GT is faster, I must have cheated). So we go again- I launch PERFECTLY immediately pulling 4 cars by the end of 1st, slamming 2nd and pulling a good 4 more, slamming 3rd and realize that this is no contest so I shut down.

The owner was like "Man, that was really fun. I never realized what it felt like to ride in this thing." He also complimented me on my launch, saying that he can't even launch it that well. I put $15 of gas into his car as a sort of "Thank you" and we went our separate ways.

Stupid Mustangs. They sound really fierce, but don't have that much forward motion--at least not enough to match the sound.

I tried to do donuts in one once, and the POS would not rotate.

^Really? Hell, I figured with 300hp and some decent torque as well as a locking diff they'd be able to cut some donuts. Did it happen to have traction control? I'm just saying because I've seen stock one's do donuts before. Were you doing it right?

Let me quantify that. It would do donuts, but barely. Too much understeer. I probably was no doing them "right" as Im used to my Miata rotating on a dime with very little effort. Maybe with proper technique...

You have to turn off traction control.

Yup yup, the LS2 goat is a bad machine, especially modded. I liked how they were rated at 13.0 for the automatic and 13.1 for the 6 speed (1/4 mile). I always wondered how come the LS2 Vette only runs a 12.7 with the same engine but much lighter. Can't go wrong with either, but right now I'm all excited about the new LS3...

I can vouch for the LS3 Vette , but this GTO was much MUCH quicker.

Depending on what mustang. The V6 stang is pure trash.

Cobra stangs are no joke though. Ask me how i know, my friends bolt on cobra spanks me soo hard every time. And the sound of his car as he's passing you or going wot next to you will make you ears bleed.

And yes the GTO is pure sex, i think i may need to get one to fulfill my hp needs.

^I agree- '03 and '04 Cobra's are badass. I'd probably get one of those if it weren't for my love for the GTO. Just something about having yet another Mustang... plus their interior is really drab, really boring, wheras the GTO is just great!

^Ah, kinda like the '67 California Special GT. Pretty much the same as a regular '67 GT, only it had Cougar taillights and some graphics.

Good kill!

For some reason there's no greater satisfaction then killing an overconfident mustang and/or civic owner. Great job

God isn't that the truth.

Damn nice kill story Rev! I enjoyed every sentence of it.

Maybe that chick won't be so cocky the next time she comes up on a GTO huh?

Great story and makes me want a Goat really bad.

Anyone ever think about how dodge came out with the new charger and then the new GTO came out. The new charger is fugly and fat where the GTO can be faster and looks so much more clean.

Poor college student right now so lets hope the new 2020 GTO is fast, lol.

I can't help but feel bad for a local Mustang though. It is a V6 auto and the owner put a rice can on it, honestly it sounds almost as bad as a Civic! Poor Mustang needs a hug and a proper exhaust system and transmission.

As for the GTO, I think if they had just called it the Pontiac Monaro it would have gone out the doors at dealers quicker than it could get there. People just saw it and thought of what this new GTO was not and compared it to the old one. Both the GTO and Charger would be excellent vehicles with different names.

Great story Those GTOs are growing on me... the fact that you can pull 400+ whp out of an NA engine, seat more than two, and still get reasonably good gas milage is pretty cool. Nice kill, I just don't understand what that chick was thinking, some people are so ignorant of what is under the hood of some cars on the road. I guess for every kill you make you educated someone

Thanks alot for the compliments guys! I appreciate it. I called my friend back to see if he could ask the dude if he's on ls1gto.com (I'm Crypto on there) but no word back yet. I'd really like to stay in touch with him because I'll have mine by the end of this year.

Also, theres a guy on the forum that used the STS C6 'vette turbo kit and fabbed it up to work with the Goat. Complete installation (including the price of the kit, pipe, fab work, supporting mods, dyno and tune) just under $9,000! And the kit itself is good for 720rwhp with the included turbo's (T4's)! Granted, you're really only safe running about 550rwhp or so with the stock internals, anything over that and the LS2 needs new guts!

BTW, this is pretty much the EXACT setup (visually) that I'm going for.

Spice Red Metallic w/ Axis Shine's (19x8.5 F w/ 35mm offset, 19x9.5 R w/ 40mm offsets [+3mm for milling if you want them to not rub])
