FD v z06: FD mistaken for c5, avoids arrest
This story is too crazy for me to make up.
I'm in my friend's 94 FD, street ported Bruce Turrentine motor, stock sequential twins at 1 bar, FMIC, Power FC, supporting mods (not dynoed). We're hanging out with our friend who has a c5 2002 Corvette Z06 with full boltons making 393rwhp, weight is like 3100lbs. We decide to run them on a local interstate which is usually not too bad for cops. The Z06 has a Valentine 1 and we also have a radar detector... we're not too worried about them, but we were at least somewhat mindful of the risk.
After scouting ahead and then turning around, we line up from a 50 kick and hit it. The FD gets up to about 110 and my friend driving hits the brakes pretty hard. We're behind by about two carlengths. Not too bad, and we didn't expect to win really. The Z06 keeps going... probably hits at least 130 before coasting/shutting down.
Out of nowhere two cops fly past us and pull the z06 over. Our radar detector never went off and it turns out neither did his. It was straight out of the show Cops... one pulls behind him, one comes to the side (*** end in the street) poised to ram the z06 if it tried to get away. We find out later that the cops come up to him and ask "Where is the other corvette you were racing?!" my friend just tells him he doesn't know.
Meanwhile, the cop on the side of the z06 is in the right lane blocking traffic and my friend driving the FD is freaking out and is about to pull over... I yell "go around them! maybe they won't pull us over." So we slow to about 50mph and go around him. Then we look in the mirrors and there is a cop right behind us with no blue lights on. Oh ****. At this point we are now cruising at about 70mph (65mph zone). The cop sits behind us, then passes us on the right hauling ***.
Turns out the cops on the side of the road had radioed ahead telling that cop to look for a Corvette. Since the cops don't know wtf an FD is (few people do), he just kept going on a wild goose chase. My friend in the z06 gets 100 in a 65 ticket (which is automatically reckless driving) plus a street racing ticket. My friend in the z06 was military so we think that's why the cops didn't arrest him and impound the car. We go home and put the ******* car away and get in our respective beaters.
So here are the really weird coincidences:
-- If my friend with the FD had put on those 99 tail lights like he had been considering, they would look much more like c5 lights and he would have been arrested.
-- If I had turned up the boost on the FC commander a little more just for that one run (I helped him road tune it w/ wideband, it would have been safe), which we were debating, we probably would have been hanging a little better, kept going, and he would have been arrested.
-- If he hadn't gotten rid of the canister-style HKS exhaust and gone with the Racing Beat dual tip catback, which is stock looking and quiet while we slowed to crusing speeds , he would have been arrested.
-- If Mazda had designed a car that sold better, he would have been arrested.
-- If cops actually thought instead of just followed orders, he would have been arrested.
Rare cars FTW!

Bruce is a contractor with Rotary Aviation and has done a how-to video on building rotary engines. He also helped develop the Rotary Aviation Super Seals. He lives about 40 minutes from us and is not only an excellent engine builder, he happens to be the only trustworthy engine builder in our metropolitan area.

Awesome story!
I LMAO
the one thing i dont get is how do cops catch up to 350/400hp sports cars after a race? (if you turned around they would have had to come from the flow of traffic you raced in correct? )
Im not one of those lame ppl calling BS, its just a little confusing to me... Did the cops ALL come from a side street by some strange coinsidence?

I can see how them catching up to us would seem like BS, but I myself am not entirely sure how that happened. For all we know, they were following us but far back enough that we couldn't pick out the distinct Crown Vic headlights. Or they were in the ditch that divides the east and westbound lanes and somehow accelerated really fast? And they never used their radar at all though. In fact, I found out today that the cops did a visual estimate and did not clock my friend in the Z06, so he's probably going to spend a shitload on a lawyer and may get it significantly reduced.
Even though we scouted ahead, we were more focused on the race than the possibility of cops. We also put too much trust in radar detectors. Complancent.

LOL just like some young kid asking me for a fund raiser and i wasn't interested since he didn't know what the hell was on the box and told me well if you can afford that blue corvette then you can afford to donate!
great story though. Just think if you were single you wouldn't have to worry about the cops since you can outrun them!

UPDATE:
Ok, this story gets even more bizarre. My friend in the Z06 was the one that got pulled over and given a speeding ticket and a street racing ticket. Well, he went to court several times and the cop never showed up. It turns out that the cop retired a few weeks after he wrote my friend the ticket! My friend didn't end up with anything on his record. I'm telling you, I couldn't even make this **** up. Too crazy.

I got radioed in as a white porsche for doing donuts in a parking lot back when I acted retarded in a vehicle (which I don't do anymore lol its very rare to see me do something like that due to cops tightening down on things and the potential health risk factor.) I found all this out due to after my leaving of wal mart parking lot and a clover leaf donut I pull into another parking lot about five miles away and an off duty fireman told me what he had heard on a the radio. He said A. don't do it again, B. Nice car, never thougth I'd see one around here, C. Later tater (lol)
Cool story by the way, sucks for the corvette fella
