'88 TII vs. '06 STI (modded) & 2000'ish Lotus Esprit Turbo (modded)

I've been getting some good ones lately! But since it's been just me in the car, no videos. I need a video camera and a wingman.

My mods: Marvelspeed large streetport, Turbonetics 62-1 (.96a/r tangential undivided hotside), E6K, etc... currently running at wastegate spring rate of 11 psi and making approximately 355-370 rear wheel horsepower (dyno showed 367 at this boost).

First, the STI. We went from 60-140, he got the punch (since he has AWD).. unfortunately, my turbo is a lag monster. Started out with me at about his door until, by about 120, I pulled a couple of lengths on him and kept them until we stopped.

His mods: his own fabricated exhaust (mean.), Perrin intake, Cobb ecu, running 23-24 psi on the stock turbo.. and some other goodies.

This next one was just about an hour ago... it was kind of a spur of the moment thing, which I usually avoid seeing as I don't like entirely "risky" racing, but I couldn't resist this car.

It was a newer yellow Lotus Esprit Turbo (judging by his boost response it was still on a twin-turbo setup). I have no freakin' clue what he had done to it, but it was among the sweetest sounding cars I have personally heard. The turbos were barely audible, the V8 roared, and the blow-off valve made the most wicked noises... Did I mention that it spat flames? I LOVED IT!

I hate to say I beat him, because it wasn't a really well-planned race and since I knew nothing about his car prior to racing I don't know if he had a good start. We started out at a light cruising, I blew by him to let him hear my turbo/blow off valve and he did the same, and then by about 60 we were dead on and ready to go. No honks or anything, we just glanced over at eachother and went for it. I got the punch and pulled hard enough through third to get a car or so on him, but when I shifted he pushed ahead of me a bit, and then when he shifted I pulled back ahead. By the end I had him by about a fender at 120 when we backed off.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get him to pull over. He ended up taking off without even letting me hear his mods or see his engine. All I know for sure is that he had exhaust and some forced induction tricks, because that wasn't a stock blow-off valve that I heard.

Coming up, as soon as I find the time to drive out to Kennedale and buy some methanol, is alcohol injection and significantly more boost... then maybe I can look into giving that 607 RWHP Kenne Bell'd Saleen S281 a go?

I was surprised. I knew I wouldn't have any trouble beating up on an Elise or Exige, but I figured something like the Esprit would blow my doors off. I suppose I just don't give the good ole FC the respect it deserves sometimes.

To each his own.

I know a few guys with Golf GTIs running 25 psi on their stock turbo and making like 180fwhp.. I guess they just like the sound? Heh.

He's building up to the turbo upgrade-- that's last mod on his list (as it should be). He's getting all of the required stuff out of the way first.. ecu, fuel, internal engine mods.. I believe he's going GT35R. Once that's said and done we'll go again, this time I'll be running ~20 psi with the alcohol injection and he'll be making a lot more power. I'll try and get someone to ride along and videotape that one.

Thanks!

It is indeed my daily driver... however, I'm going to get something more economical once I start making my commute to school... perhaps an Accord or something.

on pump gas it's ******* useless and all it does is generate excess heat.

I know the limits of VF39's, believe me.

so again. lawl.

And what difference does race gas make besides reducing the possibility of some detonation..?
