From the UK, I'm here to learn.

Hello, my name is Jordan, i am 15 years old and have recently got onto an apprenticeship with a local car body shop.
I have wanted an FD series mazda rx-7 for 8 years now, its the only car i have ever wanted. I am working hard in school to one day own one and i think the body shop will kickstart a worthy career but i am worried about a few things,
The main reason being the cost to run one. What sort of fuel consumption do they get? i have done research and have come up with figuires such as 17-9 MPG depending on modifications, i am worried that i won't ever be able to own one due to the increasing fuel costs. i have been reccomended having it as a second car but i'm sure that will work out more expensive.
I have joined the forum to benafit from a better source of information about this car.
Thanks in advance, Jordan.

And since you're in the UK, there is def a lot to think about when it comes to expenses on the almighty FD's. Mind you, if you read up on the reliabilty threads, then fuel cost is the only issue left and that's really a matter of how many nights do you want to go out with your friends for a drink in the end....or how many less pizzas you order in a week. Gas in the tank as a consideration of owning an RX-7 is a strong indicator that you need to realign concerns.

Take a poke around and see what you can find, Jordan, and welcome aboard to RX-7 Club!

I guess your right, thanks. I am currently doing an engineering course at college, for my main project and final presentation i am doing a research project on the rx-7. explaining how they were built, the innovations and whats special about their design ect. does anyone have any sources to photographs of the Rx-7 production line? or inside the factory? i understand they may be protected by mazda or something but they will be perfect for my presentation. thanks

Hi Jordan,

Welcome. I too am in the UK and considering a '7. I'm 21 and have the means to buy one, I'm just taking the time to search through the plethora of information available within this forum to help me make a choice on whether to take the proverbial plunge or not.

Like yourself, I've wanted an RX7 for a long, long time and I am really just trying to justify it to myself. Not to put too much of a dampener on things, but you probably won't be able to get one for a good few years yet due to the insurance costs on one - I'm 21 and for me I'm looking at £1200 a year. When I was 17, insurance companies wanted about £3000, which is fair enough.

Fuel prices are only going to go up mind, and if you want one the sooner the better is my approach. For what it's worth - there are a few great RX-7 specialists in the local area (I don't know whereabouts along the Southcoast you're located) But there's an excellent specialist in Portsmouth, and another in Dorset. If you're Southwest, there's the premier UK place in Exeter way.

Kudos for attempting to learn from a young age, I say stick with it and become comfortable with the idea that it's something that will take time - if you're anything like me then then a 7 will be at least your third car - and you'll be on a decent track.

Fuel prices are prohibitive, but in honesty if it's really what you want then you'll make the sacrifce.

Thats exellent, thanks, though i do still have a long way to go and am aware that one at 17-21 years old is a bit unrealistic. i have kinda worked it out on the fuel side of things. rather than using it to go EVERYWHERE like most people in huge 4x4's do, i would use it only when i need to? i would be happy using public transport to get around. that way it will effectively pro-long the life of the engine and reduce fuel and oil costs. because of course they consume alot more oil than a normal engine due to more moving parts.
Thanks for your input you have brightened up my idea a little bit, and good luck with your own car!
