Hey fellas!!!

I've had 4 rx-7's but never an fd. My Supra is going up for sale as we speak and i was looking to get a few pointers from some of you guys.

I'll be looking for a clean fd priced moderately, and looking to build a 10sec street car.

# options I'm looking at right now are...

1- build a nice 600hp motor

2- Swap in for an ls1 motor with spray

3- Swap in for a 2jz


All three set-ups will net me the same 600hp goal, but my question to you guys is simple... what is the easiest path to follow????

 

Honestly the easiest way to get there would be an LS1. There are kits available for the swap as well as wiring kits to make it that much simpler. The kits are kinda pricey but you said easiest not cheapest.

 

you can do like my friend is doing right now.... get a 240 and put a 2jz in it.... with biger turbo, and aem, and you wil set for 600 above.... about the thing you want to do to an FD.... I stick with 13b and built it, i have a 13B with t51r, about 650 right now.

 

i agree with the ls1 swap its somthing ive bin looking into..

plus such a little car with such a beefy sound.. mmmm

 

A friend of mine has done the 2jz swap in the fd.
it gets expensive. if you go single turbo and a standalone.
I would look into all your options and do your research.

 

Keep the Supra, you'll regret it if you sell it.

 

In my opinion y trade in a 2jz for a Rx7 with a 2jz??? Seems like a waist of money.....Unless u reallllly love the Fd Body..

if your gonna do any swap, I agree with "IanS" do the LS1... Its sooOOoo common now in days and really easy to find what u need.

 

ls1 swap would be fun but why get rid of the thing that makes these cars unique?

 

I think in terms of a performance standpoint, it makes great sense swapping engines into an FD body. This is especially true of the 2jz. An FD body is ALOT lighter than a Supras.

Of course cost is an issue... So I am more inclined to go the path of lowest cost.
I'm selling my 1995 mkiv because I wanted something more streetable. With a roll cage, fuel cell and built automatic, it's more of a drag car than a street car to me at this point. I'm selling the car for dirt cheap, because i want to free up some money for x-mas and still have enough to buy a clean fd.

What makes me lien towards the fd is the weight. I know the cars are very nimble and the looks are clean, but power to weight is everything in drag racing.

A stock 2jz motor can be sourced for 2500... I already have a single turbo and manifold for it as well as a pt76... I would just have to source mounts, tranny, drive-shaft and wire-harness ( along with all the other gizmos to make the dashboard work properly).

Ls1 motor ( with a nice cam) isn't too bad to source. In junkyards everywhere, this is one of the easiest motors to locate and buy parts for. Still shopping for the right place to source the conversion parts.


With option 3, I guess I just need to do all of the research and speak to a few buddies in the NY area. What does it cost to build a nice 13b these days? Reliable 10's is the goal at 130+ traps. Since this is a street car, i wouldn't be expecting better than 1.7-1.8 60ft times, I'd like to let the power make the et.

Seems like a few guys on here are very successfull with their cars. I just want it to be reliable for me-- I've had some bad luck with rotaries in the past.

i have a fd thats very clean with many parts to go with it. i was wondering what kinda supra you have? maby a trade would be in order?

 

Have you looked at the hinson LS1 kit? All the work is done for you and you can retain your PS and AC. When I get the cash for another 7 thats where its going.

Using search is always informative, but sometimes outdated. Starting a new thread keeps the information and opinions fresh. I was hoping this thread will develop the pros/cons of all three options. I will follow up with a detailed documentary of exactly the way i decide to go, including the cars dyno days and ultimately first day at the track.

I look forward to sharing my ups/downs with everyone.

Why an FD?? ...
Updated looks, rear wheel drive, and 2800lbs with full interior and a/c.... What more could anyone ask for in a 10sec daily driver, that can spend some weekends autocrossing/drifting as well??

It would be easier and cheaper to hit 600 rwhp in a 2JZ vs. a LS1 because the bottom end in a 2J is simply a better, stronger bottom end for those kind of numbers.

Kinda wonder why your goal is a number vs. a time or trap speed though? what are your goals with it other than the dyno?

Rotary is always great if you are down for the upkeep.

LS1 is always a nice choice though!

2JZ is the King!!! has proven it time and time again, also parts are available in the US...
I would do a built LS2 with a Turbo, no replacment for displacement. Especially displacement with a turbo!

 

put the 2j in it. My brother is currently doing his 2j swap in his series 8.

 

throwing in an iron block I6 into a car that originally had a 2rotor engine with 50/50 is going to do unfavorable things to the car. If you want to make huge power in an rx7, go with an LS motor. Its an aluminum V8 block so it should screw with the handling dynamics of the Rx7 by much. However, if you're looking for a dyno queen (which is what it seems like), keep your supra. It'll make more power easier and have the bigger "OUUUU" factor too.
