Opinions Are Like...Everybody's Got One
Hi there, I am a new member in New York City.
Great car club, thanks for making it what it is!
Let me start by saying first and foremost, I have a LOT of respect for all RX7/rotary engine lovers out there. Please don't get me wrong on that point. Every project is a labor of love and I respect all the hours that have been put into rotary engines.
What got me excited and off my **** was the idea of hot rodding an FD with an LS1/T54 swap. For me it is just that time in my car addiction to do a hot rod and the FD is a car that I have always loved and I know that the LS1/T54 swap produces great results. I am getting this last point from all of the FD V8 swappers who have posted on this site (thanks to y'all), plus the info that I have read on the web.
Either I just need to get seriously educated about the strengths of a rotary engine, which I am open to, or I am just a hard core pragmatist...
Case in point:
My other car is a '72 240z. The Datsun L24 engine is a rock solid, easily modifiable, long lasting, high fuel mileage engine. So, on my resto mod project I swapped my late L24 for an earlier L24/E31 block and I upgraded the 4 speed to a 5 speed. A buddy of mine was in the middle of an LS1/T54 swap into a 240z at the same time, which I was able to witness firsthand. In my opinion, the L24/L28 engines aren't broke so a LS1/T54 swap into a 240z is less appealing to ME.
People throw V8s into everything, Jags, Austin Healeys, Porsches, Datsuns, Honda S2Ks, on and on. I think that is just the hot rod spirit living on in the US.
I don't even want to touch or deal with a rotary engine. For me, the V8 swap is perfect because it should yield a modern, reliable, high performance, gorgeous daily driver. And that works for me.
Anyway I am at the VERY beginning of my quest. Thanks to everybody in advance, because I am sure that I will start posting tons of questions along the way.
Anybody in the NYC/LI area who did an FD - LS1/T54 swap PM me asap!
Thanks for listening.
Marc
