Old member, with a new-to-me FD!

Hi fellow Rotorheads,

Those of you that know me have seen my FC at Deals Gap a bunch of times over the last 10 years, but I finally added an FD to my stable after a VERY long hiatus from owning one. I had a new '93 back in the day when they were new, but only had that FD for about 9~10 months before I had to sell it to get something more family friendly -- son #1 was on his way out back then. Anyway, here's a picture of the new-to-me FD from the pre-purchase inspection I just did; it should be delivered to me in MD by this Tuesday:

Vital stats: Chassis has about 67K miles on it, body condition is about as perfect as can be, zero rust and paint work is only 2 years old. Has a rather unique black with a hint of a purple/indigo sparkle to it. It's running a Borg Warner SXE 360 series (IIRC) single turbo, Link G4+ Fury ECU, lots of fuel & related go-fast goodies, and the motor is a brand new Mazda 13BREW crate motor still under break-in with only about 25 miles on it! It also sports a pretty sweet DBW setup that is managed by the Link too. Some of my pre-planned projects for it:

- It needs new tires; existing ones have plenty of tread, but date codes are too old, and they are showing signs or cracking/dry rot so tires is #1 priority.

- Suspension seems remarkably tight from the test drive & inspection, but I suspect it may need some work over time to refresh things.

- Do some interior refresh & restoration work to clean it up a bit and add an audio system (prior owner removed audio system, and it currently has a custom HVAC/radio panel with 6x standard 2-1/8" gauge openings in it). I'll probably be posting a for sale ad for that part soon so I need a normal HVAC/radio panel and will NEVER need to run 6 individual gauges.

- Prior owner removed OMP and runs pre-mix; I'll be returning the OMP and adding the RA OMP adapter kit so I can run pre-mix through that, and let the Link ECU manage the OMP. Basically the same setup I have on my FC. I hate adding pre-mix at gas refills - what a PITA.

- Source a 2nd oil cooler & associated plumbing bits to do the R1/R2 dual oil cooler setup.

- Prior owner removed the AC system under the engine bay. Some repackaging of the big Megan radiator and the FMIC will be necessary to fit a decent sized condenser (generic parallel flow 14"X24" will work for R134A), but it looks do-able. AC Compressor will drop right in to existing PS/AC bracket, and everything is there & works AC wise on the interior side of the firewall. Some custom plumbing & hoses and it's done.

That's it for now, I'm sure I'll be picking everyone's brains on the 3rd gen sections as questions come up.

Absolutely stunning example!! I feel like you truly deserve the car after the long wait!! Can't wait to see more pictures of the car and to hear how it feels to finally be back in the driver's seat of an FD!

Thanks! I'm sure I'll post up a build thread at some point to cover all the various projects I have planned for it. In the mean time, here's a link to the prior owner's (forum user name: zensation) build thread for the car when he had it: https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread...build-1113634/

BTW, prior owner is a great guy to do business with. If your FD needs its instrument cluster electrical guts repaired/restored to fix the usual ailments FDs get, or are interested in switching to a DBW throttle setup, you should look him up. This car was the prototype for the DBW TB manifold adapter he fabricated to integrate the GM/Caddy DBW throttle body & Cosmo upper intake manifold, and the RX8 DBW pedal into the FD. The way it operates & looks, you wouldn't know it wasn't a Mazda designed OEM setup.
