FL Noob in the House!!

Hello all! My name is Derek and I'm from the sunny state of Florida! Just "inherited" my first ever rotary/rx7! It's an old skool '83 GSL. Right now the only known issue is the clutch, as it was slipping so bad it wasn't driveable! The previous owner said that the clutch was recently replaced, but it def doesn't seem that way! I'll be asking a TON of questions along the way with this car, as it just became #1 in the project slot in my garage. Looking forward to getting to know all of you and benefitting from your collective knowledge!

Well Derek, you came to the right place to get the info you'll need to get that car road-worthy and then start the modifications.

Thanks for taking the time to register and welcome aboard to RX-7 Club! The more 1stgen folk who join, the better sez I! Got an '83 rex myself.

Hey Derek, How come you don't spell your name right?? ;-)

More first gens = better! What part of Florida you from? I grew up in Fl all around the gulf coast mostly.

Good luck with your car, and post pics when you get a chance.

Thanks for the welcome, guys! I'm in Palm Coast, on the East coast between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. I've always loved 1st gen rx7's! I got my 1st taste of exactly what they could do one night street racing in the Maryland/DC area back in the mid-90's. I was driving a '93 Acura Integra with the usual import mods and a small shot of nitrous at the time. There was a Jamaican dude named Paul that used to run his 1st gen every weekend and I'd never seen the guy lose a race! On a quiet Wed night, only a few of us kicking it at Metro rd, Paul asked me if I wanted to run him....Nope....not this kid.....I know how fast your car is and I don't wanna be embarrassed! We talked briefly and then the cops roll in and chase us out of our spot. As we hopped onto Rt.50 to head into DC to go to V Street, I notice Paul is right behind me on the ramp. I say to myself "**** it" and arm the nitrous. On ramp straightens out and I'm GONE, spraying in 3rd, 4th, and holding it in 5th gear, wide open, approaching redline and paul is still BEHIND me! "Holy ****!" I say to myself "I'm beating him!".......Then, reality hit. Paul moved to the right and walked past me like I was ******* going backwards. My car had nothing left, wasn't going any faster, and he just cruised right on by. I'd estimate that when he went by me we were going in the neighborhood of 135 or so....my speedo was pointing at the "e" in "unleaded fuel only" at the bottom of the gauge. I arrived at V Street and parked next to Paul, and he's already laughing...."you didn't even taste 5th gear" he says. At that point, I knew I wanted a 1st gen rx7. I later found out that he was running a bridgeport motor on the street, which at that time I had no idea what that meant (still don't really), and that he blew it up fairly regularly because he was pushing the envelope so far with it. That car was SO effing fast! Between that and the styling, I'm hooked! I have less than zero knowledge of rotary motors, so this should be fun making dumb noob mistakes as I build the car I have a feeling there will be many many lessons learned the hard way, kinda like when I built my 1st Grand National....(they don't like nitrous, by the way) lesson learned. Again, looking forward to getting to know all of you guys and building this Rex!!
