My name is Mike. I'm originally from the Bay Area but am currently living in Tucson, AZ (although I spend a ton of time in Phoenix as well, as that's where my wife's family is). I recently purchased a 93 touring, which is currently on a truck en route from California.
I bought it from a shop that is highly reputable, so my hope is that it will remain mechanically sound for awhile (or as sound as a rotary can be...) while I address the cosmetics a bit, since it definitely needs some love in that department.
Anyway, looking forward to this adventure and would love to meet any locals, if they're around!
I know, I know... we actually just moved down here a couple of weeks ago for my wife's residency. The good news is that it's only temporary, but the bad news is that temporary = 5 years
Let us know when she arrives. I'm up in Phoenix as well. As Arca_ex said, a pretty solid community of rotorheads here on the surface of the sun. Is the car basically stock, or has it had mods? If your plan is to daily drive it, you'll want to ensure that your cooling system is in tip-top shape out here in the Desert SW.
It showed up last night. The exterior is in worse shape than I thought it would be, and the interior is going to need a LOT of love, but I bought it as a project so I guess that's okay. Plus, I actually like the tan interior, so hopefully I'll have an easier time finding some replacement bits.
Good to know there are some guys around! I'll have to come up for a meet or something one of these days. It won't be used as a daily driver, mainly just weekends.
I guess the story behind the car is about a year ago, the previous owner dropped it off at Rotorsport in the bay area because it wouldn't pass smog. Paul at the shop ended up putting about $7500 in parts and labor into it, replacing a ton...full cooling system including the radiator and pump, plugs, wires, all silicone vacuum lines, new solenoids, a bunch more... it passed smog, but the bill ran up so high that the owner abandoned it. The shop put a lein on it, and then eventually sold it to me.
So, hopefully it will remain fairly mechanically sound while I address the various cosmetic issues it has. It already has the wheels and a Racing Beat exhaust (which I'd like to trade for something else), but it needs a non-plastic AST (it has a brand new OEM one) next, probably.
It's got big chips in the paint front and rear, the driver door has a giant gash in it that for some reason isn't in the pictures, and the paint is super old and oxidized. It's actually Montego Blue, not black, although you wouldn't know from the photos.
First order of business, though, is going to be the drivers door lock, it would rather bend the keys than actually lock/unlock the car. Need to figure that one out. After that, it's on to the interior, which may possibly have never been cleaned before...ever.
That sucks, shipping damage? You get a really good deal on car, enough not to pitch a bitch about the issues? If you already said, sorry I missed it, but have you compression tested the engine? What was PSI of you did?
Yeah, I've sent an email to the previous owner to see if that little issue was present prior to shipping. I'm honestly not that worried about it, though, because the entire car really needs a repaint.
I don't have the compression numbers in front of me, but it was tested and showed good compression. The car pulls really nicely, no smoking or leaking of any kind.
Unrelated, here's a picture of the new acquisition and the outgoing car, which should hopefully be sold in the next couple of days. Funny going from basically the most reliable sports car of all time to this
LoL, true dat, but there's something undeniable about a project car. Personally I got so attached I bought the darn engine back, blown, of all things, it became like my kid, I had so many hours into it......LOL
Oh, and aside from the wheels and exhaust, I forgot to mention that the car also has Efini twins installed. I also have a downpipe sitting in the garage as well, but I have no idea what brand it is. Hopefully I'll get to install that soon.
