AR Newb to rotaries....

Well figured Id fire up my first post. I just purchased an 88 GTU for 500 bucks. The car had been sitting for 2 years. A friend of mine helped me get it running again (it used to be his before the guy that had it sold it to me). Anyways she fired right up and it seemed like one of the apex seals was sticking a bit. After letting it run for a while it let free and now I have a good running GTU. It needs quite a bit of work to be any kind of decent reliable good looking car. This however is gonna be my toy. It will have a fully gutted interior aside from dash door panels and seats. Already is sporting a koyo radiator, full 3 inch exhaust, short throw shifter, came with a full set of energy suspension poly bushings and has a manual steering rack. The car is white and has about 140k miles on it.

Things I have already accomplished with the car include complete removal of emissions, Throttle body mod, OMP removal (drained tank and put fresh gas in with premix). Air pump removed, (waiting on dual belt alt. pulley) New o2 sensor, new plugs, wires, new fuel hoses, Pulsation Damper removed until I get enough funds to purchase a new one or buy aftermarket FPR with one built in. Fired it up yesterday late at night after all this and it cranked right up and purred like a kitten aside from an exhaust leak at the manifold to downpipe flange, and I have fuel pissing from the primary rail again. Guess I should have got some new crush gaskets. I have them in hand now so I can fix that later today when I get off work. Before all this work the idle would surge and be all over the place and once the car was warmed up it would die out. Adjusted TPS. Still need to adjust the idle after I get the fuel problem sorted out. Need to change oil and filter and she should be just about road ready.

Now a bit about myself. My name is Jeremiah Im 26 and I reside in Jacksonville, AR. Im in the Air Force and am married with a 1 motnth old son. I am no stranger to the car scene or Mazdas for that matter. I am new to Rotaries. I seem to pick up on things pretty quickly so Im sure ill get the hang of the rotary pretty quick. Prior cars include 91 240sx, 93 Escort GT (mazda BP engine), Festiva that was in the process of a B6T swap, 90 Celica Alltrac, 98 Subaru Impreza Outback sport, and my last car that I traded in for the wife to get a new car 05 SRT-4.

Looking forward to learning gobs of info from the boards and meet some new people on the way. Maybe make a deal or two in the For sale threads, who knows. Thank you to admin for providing a sweet info packed forum for guys like myself.

Thanks, Jeremiah.

P.S. Pics to come soon.

Well I got the fuel problem sorted out. One of the primary injector o-rings was shot spraying fuel all over the place. Threw some new ones in and the fuel problem is fixed. Now however I have a nice high pitched scream from a vacuum leak. I am guessing the lower injector grommits are shot so I ordered new ones from Mazdatrix along with a new UIM gasket. Hopefully that will get everything sorted out and I can get this car back on the road where it belongs. Thanks again for such an informative site it has helped out a lot.

Welcome. You say the apex seal was sticking??? There are 3 apex seals on each rotor which are the equivalent to a head gasket.

some good sites to check out:

I am quite aware that there are 3 apex seals per rotor. The car when first started up had a horrible miss to it like it was only hitting on 5 of the 6 compression sweeps. Could possibly have been the MMO we squirted in the rotor housings before we started it however it seemed like something had freed itself and it ran great after about 5 minutes worth of warm up time. Has plenty of power on acceleration. Before I stripped off the manifold and before the fuel issue I did a water treatment on it with a friend and I had about 4-5 ft worth of carbon stains past the tail pipes. I am gonna probably due an ATF treatment to it next and than possibly another water treatment just to make sure a good amount of the carbon is out of the engine. Trying to make this thing into a daily driver possibly so I can get rid of my gas saver. Just waiting on the lower injector grommets and UIM gasket to come in from Mazdatrix so I can get to cracking on this thing. Still waiting on my dual belt alt. pulley as well. Thank you for the links they may help a bit. I have been reading up on things for probably about 3 months before I finally decided to purchase the car and have had the car for about 2 months now. Just tore into it last week after months of reading to make sure I didnt screw something up. I wouldnt consider myself a rotary genius quite yet but I am getting the hang of things pretty quickly.

Congrats on the purchase, I just acquired one as well and have been enjoying it. Maybe some of the "experts" can chime in but that 3" exhaust on a naturally aspirated mainly stock rotary might not be helping you.

Im gonna need the luck and hopefully ill be seeing you guys on the road for once. I know im still due to post a pic. It will come with the good weather after I can wash it back up. Its alive!!! Installed my lower grommets and new intake manifold gasket. Fired her up and no more screaming vacuum leak. Had to adjust the idle back up but after that she purred about as good as a rotary can. Went through the car and found all kinds of Delrin bushings in the rear storage bins and where the spare used to be. I have Delrin motor mounts, tranny mounts, dtss eliminator bushings, differential bushings, rear trailing arm bushings, and a whole box of energy suspension bushings. I am very happy that I bought this car now having more money in parts alone sitting inside of it than what I paid for it and as a bonus it now runs great. After the rain lets up ill post pics and keep everyone updated on things.
