IA New from slightly south-er mid west

Im thinking about buying an rx7 at a local auto yard... I started looking for information and wound up here... Near as I can tell the car is in excelent condition for its age... 88 rx7 na... almost no rust... only the passenger side fender right above the wheel... then engine bay is very clean... almost no road grime... and its a convertable... I found 1 rip on the passenger side very small... less than an inch but its there... there is alot of play in the shifter(its manual btw)... and the driverside door handle trim is loose on the side nearist the back of the car... The big thing is they would not let me test drive it... only start it in the lot... He said people have taken it out before and it dies while out and has to be towed back... or after a couple times out it refuses to start back up.... for an hour or two... Im hoping to talk him down.... he is only asking $1850... So help me out... or I could stick with my 95 Civic DX with vtec swap and 91 dodge stealth rt/tt... So here I ask... Will you give me some advice? Hope to hear from you soon.

Kinda sounds weird to me, Could be simple tuneup, or it could be low compression in the motor.

I would get a decent compression test done to see what the engine is like.
