NJ New rx7's, coming over from 240's

following the "Whats your story" guidelines:

How did you get introduced to the RX-7?
Ive been into cars for awhile now, not too involved until recently though. For the past 2 years Ive been driving 240's and drifting them. Ive known about rx7's from friends owning them and they always had a certain appeal to me but were never in my price range, but now I have a stable and suitable income and am some what settled down now.

Where did you get your RX-7 from?
I currently own a 1993 RX7, I dont know much about this car yet and am still researching and learning. I bought it from another member on here and was told it was rebuilt 17k ago(had receipts) and 99 spec turbos and all that jazz. Went up to WV last wensday to finally pick it up and have been feeling it out the past couple days. Hopefully on wensday I can get it up on a lift and figure out where that rear clunk is coming from(maybe diff bushings, hopefully not the trailing arms as I hear they are expensive) and to get my wideband installed, give it a general look over and a fresh tune up.

Have you had any problems with the RX-7?
Its running a bit(by a bit, I mean EXTREMELY) rich, I believe its due to the tune as I was told it has a PowerFC. I dont know how comfortable I feel attempting to tune it myself so I am going to try to find a reputable shop in either VA or NJ to do it and teach me a few things. Also I have a bad clunk in the rear end as stated earlier.

What are you plans for the RX-7?
Leaving it pretty much stock, I am going to clean up the engine by some. Give it a new paint job, keeping it the same color it currently is, replace worn suspension parts and bushing, minor things like that. Maybe down the road Ill get another one to use as a track car.

What do you know about cars and RX-7s in general?
I wouldnt say Im a know-it-all of cars and the likes, but I do feel I have a good understanding of how they work, why they do what they do and all that. I know enough to get myself in trouble thats for sure! haha. As for RX-7s this is a whole new ballpark for me and want to learn as much as possible about them as I did with my 240s

Who taught you what you know about cars?
Everything I know is either self taught or from lending a hand to my friends when they work on theirs. I reside on a Marine Corps Base and frequent the hobby shop and pick up what I can their as well.

Have you met any new friends since owning your RX-7?
I have only owned my RX-7 for the past 5-day so for now no, but I have seen a few rolling around this area so I do plan on it!

Ill put some picks up for you all later!

Welcome to the club.

Hope you resolve the two issues it has... chances are there will be more also but hey that's the name of the game.

Post some pics if you get a chance.

Thanks!
I just had the chance to get it up on a lift Wednesday, didn't see any major concerns though. I'm still looking around for a bushing kit, seems like none are produced any more haha. As for the running rich issue, I'm waiting to order my fc-hako till next week.
Anyone know some good sites that sell RX7 related items?
Also, I'll post up some pictures either later tonight or tomorrow.

www.mazdatrix.com has damn near everything you'll need for your seven
www.racingbeat.com has alot of stuff also.

There's a vendors list sticky-ed in the 2nd Gen section if I recall right.

*Edit*

I stand corrected. Just took a look and can't find it.

Thanks for the heads up! Im actually located in Quantico, VA and usually end up in jersey on the weekends(originally from East Brunswick, NJ) Know any shops in the jersey area with a dyno and what not thats open this weekend so I can atleast go to check and make sure my tune is straight? Anyways thanks for the welcome!

So far with the fd it seems that instead of just buying thing cause I either want them or think itd be cool, Im actually focusing on what HAS to get done or actually useful versus pissing money away haha.

Once again I apologize to everyone for not having pictures yet, certain people have yet to send them to me!

Thanks! haha. Alot of my 240 buddies are hating on me hard! I think theyre just a bit jealous though however I still love the look of a clean looking s13 coupe. But in the end right now fd>s13 hah

Bah I remember my first s13 coupe... gave me so many headaches within days of owning it! The FD so far has only had the clutch safety switch grommet thing break on me so far, just need to reach down and push the button down when starting it for the time being! lol

Wait, your car is stock but has a PowerFC? If its running rich because of it, it may just have a base map and still needs to be tuned.

From what Ive been told its completely stock, minus the 99 spec twins which i believe are in a non-seq config(not sure how to check, I saw some block off plates, again I'm pretty new at this so bare with me!) and full 3in RB exhaust.
But you may be correct that it is still on the base map, I have not had the chance to get my hands on a datalogit or PFC commander. I am looking to buy the FC Hako cable though but am also still debating going the commander + datalogit route as well, any suggestions?
Anyone in the va area wanna meet up sometime and let me borrow their datalogit to pull my map and check it out?

So this weekend I plan on just doing a few maintenance things before going to the dyno tomorrow afternoon, mainly replacing the FPD, change plugs and wires, oil change and possibly a coolant flush(maybe just a drain and replace sorta deal, not all out flush)

BUMP!

So went to the hobby shop on base today to replace the FPD, change plugs and wires, trans oil and engine oil. ran into a few snags... 1, WTF was mazda thinking for using philips head screws on the fpd? I striped one out and now am unable to pull it, any suggestions guys? 2, I have a lot of extra plugs sitting underneath the UIM, mostly ones sitting under what I believe is the rats nest. 3. I am missing my O2 plug? and finally after putting it all back together, I drove around a bit, popped the hood and find either my turbos are glowing red hot or the coolant line running near them is red hot?

If anyone can hook me up with a few ideas of whats going on thatd be awesome!
Thanks in advance everyone

If you're running the car hard, the turbos will emit a faint glow from what I'm told. Just take the FPD out and replace it with the banjo bolt mod (see your FD tech section for details).

doesnt seem like the turbos, im leaning more towards the coolant line right near them. btw I am running 99 spec twins in a non seq setup I believe.
