New Member: R1 Back on the Road 15yrs Later

Greetings all,

Longtime reader here, figured it’s time to join.

The inner water jacket seal had failed on my R1. This year, I finally got the chance to rebuild the engine and I’m happy to say it’s back on the road and running strong! I’ve kept everything stock, except for a Koyo radiator and Racing Beat catback exhaust.

I'm a sucker for a clean Brilliant Black R1. Did you replace the AST? It's the 2nd most common cooling system failure.

Good looking car, nice to keep something close to original.

I haven’t replaced the AST, but I probably should. I think I’ll go with the RE Amemiya version.

Thx. I’m not against making some reliability mods (i.e. silicone hoses, etc.), but otherwise I’m keeping it as designed.

I was planning to keep the cassette deck even, but the radio isn’t working, and the only tape I found was my wife’s old Sarah McLachlan mix tape, haha!

Thx, I bought it in Cali back in 99. Traded it to my brother for a few years and then got it back after the coolant seal went. I’m not going to part with it again!

I did not see that. I wonder why? I use mine as a catch can for the engine blow by.

I have a hand made AST from a friend. My most prized part possession.

(Besides my one spirit r wheel).

Too funny, I’m jealous. Did you buy that single one for sale on ebay earlier this year?

There’s a mixed set of Efini RZ/SP rears for sale on ebay right now. A little pricey considering it’s four rear tires that don’t match…
