CA New member: '94 FD in CA

Hello everyone!

As a very new member, I wanted to re-introduce myself. My first thread here was announcing my intent and plans to purchase an FD in the very near future, but it came across as a bit of a WTB vibe, so I wanted to remake the thread.

Well, I actually pulled the trigger on an FD yesterday, so I will now officially re-introduce myself (which I figured would be okay since I have like, two posts here). New member, white 1994 Mazda RX-7 FD out of SoCal. Pleasure to meet you all! Looking forward to learning about all the quirks of living a rotary life in general. I'll shamelessly admit that it was always a childhood dream since first watching Initial D and getting dragged into cars as a kid, and while my tastes have changed since I've gotten older (I like the white over the yellow now, and prefer a mostly stock example to a modified one personally), I still wanted to get one to tick that box off in life one day, and maybe after watching a bit too many of the "attainable dream cars series/special" episodes on Straight Pipes with Jakub Yuri and ChrisFix, I decided now was as good a time as any.

Through the good and the bad, I'm looking forward to this journey and our time together!

Welcome to the club. Don't be embarrassed about what sparked things off for you. I got my FC because of Initial D too, and look what happened.

Owning a FD can be a bit daunting at first, especially in stock form with the vacuum system that operates the twin turbos. But the good news is that most issues you're likely to encounter have been covered and a little research can save you a lot of frustration.

Here's a random assortment, pics I borrowed from seller's ad, haven't really taken photos myself yet. Rear end shot I just snapped on my phone. Made myself a dumb little premix funnel at home for free. LOL

Also....how I started the morning off. I feel like this will be just a part of FD life, will have to figure out what the check light and seatbelt lights are when I have more time. Seems to drive fine, though.

Dunno if I'd say we're off to a good start, but it is what it is, and I'm still riding my emotional high of finally indulging my inner twelve year old.

One other thing is I'll be looking into going back to a stock intake, I think, and considering maybe/need to dig into the Apexi Power FC or something or other.

Also, please look into getting stock ducting panels back on it. FDs are heat monsters that need EVERY bit of cooling airflow that they can get to appease the beast.

I will certainly do so, I'll have to figure out everything I need at some point, but appreciate the help getting there!

You can get a 32oz Marvel Mystery Oil and take the bottle, the long neck made it easy to pour and it has measurement marker on the side. I keep it in a ziplock bag and store it in the rear bin, been using that since I bought my FD 11 years ago.

Welcome back as it were. Thats a beautiful FD you found! I think you're off to a great start honestly. Would love to see more pictures of the car when you have time!

The part you're missing is called the "crossover duct" if I remember correctly. Also if you do decide to put the stock intake back on, I'm sure you'll find a buyer for that M2 set up.

Nice and clean chaste white 94 with a glass sunroof?? You have a gem there.

Thank you everyone and thanks for this post! I’m actually not a sunroof fan generally but knowing it’s actually a desirable option on this vehicle does make me feel a bit better about it.

my major problem being they eat an inch or two of headspace so I have to go aftermarket lower seats in this vehicle to fit without crushing my neck.

If anyone knows any good SoCal rotary specialists too please feel free to suggest in a DM, I’m guessing from digging a bit that the seatbelt light is from ECU2 and hoping the CEL is correlated, but always good to know what my worst case fallback plan is.

Welcome!

I have had several friends from Cali recommend Lucky 7 Racing. I hear they are backlogged - but you might give them a call to check.
Does your car have the bose system (giant snake sub in the trunk)?

Yes indeed, not sure exactly how that all works but it sure does look pretty sick, haha.

First and foremost welcome to FD ownership. IMO Socal is one of the best places to own an FD with plenty of rotary shops, sevenstock, nearby mountain drives, and mild winters.

I love white FD's BTW so congrats on the buy.

Is your OMP working? Mine is and I've never premixed ever. The only reason I mention it is because lately a lot of internet folks are calling for premix without truly knowing why they are doing it in the first place.

As an FYI that M2 CAI is a very sought after item, so if I were you I'd keep it even if you install an OEM unit. BTW- the unmodified OEM intake robs air from the already undersized SMIC so that is why many people did away from them. I said unmodified because adamc created a "cheap bastard intake" that works great. He named it cheap bastard because you take the OEM unit and modify it to receive fresh air like the your M2 unit.

As an FYI - you can still get roof skins from mazda. So if you need the headroom don't hesitate to pull the trigger and make your car sunroof-less.

The bose snake uses waveguide technology to provide a clean crisp sound, it uses sound propagation. Now the bose system is a 1 Ohm system that has a passive head unit. What that means is that the head unit is not providing power directly to the speakers and therefore each speaker has its own individual amp to drive them. I see that you have an aftermarket head unit, interesting. How does the music sound? I ask because the mismatch in impedance can create clarity issues plus I would think the extra power coming from the head unit would cause the speakers to be overdriven. That is unless they also replaced the speakers as well (some people have done that).
